How the Higgs particle gives things mass

The infamous Higgs particle has a weighty task: It grants all the other elementary particles their mass. Without it, they ? we ? would zip around frantically at the speed of light, too foot-loose to form atoms. But how does the Higgs do it?

In lieu of equations, physicists tend to explain the process in terms of sports and syrup.

First, each of the elementary particles acquires its unique set of attributes by interacting with invisible entities called fields. Like football fields, these are large stages upon which individuals (be they electrons or running backs) dash this way and that, and occasionally bash together. But unlike football fields, the fields of physics are three-dimensional, and extend infinitely in all directions.

One such field is the electromagnetic (EM) field ? the kind you can feel near the poles of a red and silver bar magnet, but which actually exists everywhere all the time. Each particle interacts with the EM field in a way that depends on its electric charge. For example, electrons, whose charge is -1, tend to move through the field toward the positive ends of bar magnets, and to clump together with positively charged protons.

Like a sports field with its corresponding ball, each field of physics has a corresponding particle. The EM field, for example, is associated with the photon, or particle of light. This correspondence plays out in two ways: First, when the EM field is "excited," meaning its energy is flared up in a certain spot, that flare-up is, itself, a photon.

Secondly, when particles interact with the EM field (for example, when they are drawn toward the oppositely charged end of a magnet), they experience the field by absorbing and emitting a constant stream of "virtual photons" ? photons that momentarily pop in and out of existence just for the purpose of mediating the particle-field interaction.

There also exists a Higgs field. It gives particles mass. [ How Do You Weigh an Atom? ]

Except for massless photons and gluons, "all elementary particles get their masses from their interactions with the (Higgs) field, kind of like being 'slowed down' by passing through a thick syrup," explained James Overduin, a physicist at Towson University in Maryland.

Some particles have a harder time trudging through the syrupy Higgs field than others, and as a result, they're heavier. However, it isn't known why certain particles, such as the extremely corpulent top quark, are thousands of times more encumbered by the Higgs field than are lightweight particles, such as electrons and neutrinos. "Theorists have been searching for some way to actually predict (particle) masses from first principles. No convincing theory has yet emerged," said John Gunion, author of "The Higgs Hunter's Guide" (Basic Books, 1990) and a professor of physics at the University of California, Davis. [ Are There Higgs Bosons in Space? ]

But here's where the Higgs particle comes in: Just as the photon mediates interactions with the EM field and is itself an excitation of the EM field, the Higgs particle mediates interactions with the Higgs field, and is itself an excitation of the Higgs field.

Particles trudge through the Higgs field by exchanging virtual Higgs particles with it. And a real Higgs particle surfaces when the field becomes excited, like a slosh of the syrup. Detecting such a slosh (i.e. the particle) is how physicists can be sure the syrup (i.e. the field) exists. "You have to get enough energy to excite the field so that it looks like a particle to us. Otherwise we don't know the field is there," Craig Blocker, a Higgs-hunting physicist at Brandeis University, told Life's Little Mysteries.

But because the Higgs particle is extremely high-energy (or, equivalently, very heavy), it's tough to excite the Higgs field enough to create one. That's where the Large Hadron Collider comes in: by smashing together high-speed protons, it generates enough juice to slosh the syrupy Higgs field around now and again, producing Higgs bosons.

MasterCard Ties Up With T-Mobile For NFC Mobile Payments In Europe

tmmcAnother strong step ahead of mobile payments today: MasterCard and Deutsche Telekom have announced that they will work together to roll out services across DT's footprint in Europe, starting with an NFC wallet solution in Poland in Q3 and Germany following soon after. For now, the U.S. is not being factored in as part of the deal. In all, Deutsche Telekom has 93 million mobile subscribers in Europe, and 129 million world-wide. The move is a sign not only of how bigger companies are now stepping up to cooperate better in mobile payments, but the way that carriers are wedging themselves into the equation to make it happen. The deal follows on from news on Friday that France Telecom is also anteing up big time in the area of NFC, and will start rolling out NFC-enabled SIM cards all new subscribers in France, with further markets getting added on throughout the year.

Heat too much for Strasburg as Braves beat Nats

By GEORGE HENRY

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:42 p.m. ET June 30, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Minor won for just the second time in 12 starts and the Atlanta Braves overcame 104-degree heat to beat Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals 7-5 on Saturday.

Strasburg (9-3) left after just three innings because of weather-related issues. He didn't return to begin the fourth, tying for the shortest outing of his 33-start career.

Braves officials reported no major health problems among the announced crowd of 26,491. The team credited eight free water stations at Turner Field with helping fans cool off.

Strasburg allowed two hits, three runs and four walks. Throwing 36 of his 67 pitches for strikes, Strasburg struck out four to reach 122, most in the majors.

Strasburg took extra time between pitches and walked slowly between innings. He hit an RBI single and left trailing 3-2 after the Braves' three-run third.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson came out of the dugout after the third to tell home plate umpire Marvin Hudson that Strasburg was leaving as Chien-Ming Wang jogged in from the bullpen.

The Nationals, who had won 12 of Strasburg's 15 previous starts, trailed after Strasburg gave up an RBI double to Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman's sacrifice fly and Dan Uggla's RBI double.

Atlanta had lost four of six and dropped 16 of 26 to Washington at home dating to October 2009, but the Braves scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth off Wang to take a 7-2 lead.

Strasburg lost consecutive starts for the first time since June 2010, when Kansas City and Atlanta beat him in the fourth and fifth starts of his career. His previous shortest outing was Sept. 11, 2011, when he received no-decision at home against Houston - the second start he made after returning from elbow surgery on Sept. 3, 2010.

Minor (4-6) had lost his last two starts, allowing eight earned runs and four homers at the New York Yankees and Boston. The left-hander was pulled for Kris Medlen with no out in the sixth and runners on second and third.

Medlen gave up RBI singles to Tyler Moore and Jesus Flores as the Nationals cut the lead to 7-4.

After the Nationals made it 7-5 in the seventh on Adam LaRoche's RBI double, Chad Durbin replaced Medlen and walked two before stranding the bases loaded on a grounder by Flores.

Craig Kimbrel earned his 23rd save and converted his 15th straight opportunity by retiring Ryan Zimmerman on a groundout and striking out Michael Morse and LaRoche. Kimbrel was coming off a rare loss in a non-save situation Thursday against Arizona that ended his 17-game scoreless streak.

Washington led 1-0 in the first on Zimmerman's RBI groundout.

Strasburg helped himself with an RBI single in the second after a double by LaRoche.

In the third, Strasburg walked Michael Bourn and Martin Prado before Heyward doubled for Atlanta's first hit on Strasburg's 61st pitch.

Minor stranded the bases loaded in the third when Ian Desmond grounded into a double play and then retired six of the next seven batters.

In the fourth, Wang gave up Juan Francisco's RBI double, Bourn's RBI double and Prado's sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Andrelton Simmons' RBI single made it 7-2.

NOTES: Strasburg is 1-2 with a 6.28 in three career starts at Turner Field. ... Simmons had three hits. ... Bourn stole two bases, giving him 22 this year.

Battle plan: Apple vs. Microsoft vs. Google

1 day

In the last few weeks,?the tech industry's?biggest players have shown off their newest software and hardware, all aiming to make big moves before the end of the year. Apple has iOS 6 and the new MacBook Pros, Microsoft unveiled the new Surface and is preparing Windows 8 for launch, and Google has shown off the new version of Android and entered the tablet game.

It should be much more exciting than last year. What did 2011 have? A spec bump on the iPhone and iPad, a slow warming to the Windows Phone ecosystem, and the?lackluster launches of a social network and (failed)?desktop platform?by Google. By comparison, 2012 should be a battle royale.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that doesn't grant reporters privileged access to Microsoft products and services, nor does it influence their opinion of them.)

Let's look at what each company has in store:

Apple
Big changes are afoot this year: a truly new iPhone is expected, sure, but June's announcements already telegraphed their intentions: a return to the high end, and freezing out Google.

After aggressively pricing almost all their hardware via partnerships and ruthless negotiation with manufacturers, Apple has managed to push its products down from luxury to the mainstream. The iPhone is now considered a standard device, and the MacBook Air, once incredibly overpriced, is now setting the bar for PC laptops.

This has given Apple the market share to start selling extremely expensive things again, starting with the Retina?MacBook Pro. Soon there will likely be a 13-inch version as well, and they will both sell like hotcakes?? even at around $2,000 per unit. The cheapest new iPhone will probably still cost $200 to consumers, but only because Verizon and AT&T will have no choice but to subsidize it.

iOS 6 is on its way as well, and it's evident that Apple is using its mobile platform as both carrot and stick. Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, and more are getting the red carpet treatment, integrated right into the OS. But Google is getting the cold shoulder as Apple moves to its own maps and tries to get users to ask Siri instead of Google.

What could go wrong? If Google's?Android OS?was more mature and more evenly upgraded (that is, less "fragmented"), it?could pose a threat to Apple's near-monopoly in the hugely profitable paid-apps ecosystem. And Apple is still lagging behind in cloud services, losing out on many fronts ? including?file sharing and storage, streaming media,?email and Web apps ??to Google, Microsoft, and smaller companies. Apple can only keep you attached to their services if those services are competitive, and the competition is moving faster than they are. And be honest: iOS and OS X are both starting to look a bit old.

Microsoft
The year?2012 will be looked on as a watershed moment in the company's history: Windows 8 is the biggest change ever made to the world's most popular OS, and opinions are in no way unanimous on the new look and feel. But Microsoft hopes to build on their success in the living room and make Windows and Xbox an ecosystem families and friends can live in, not just a set of isolated products.

The Surface tablet is Microsoft's way of telling the world that it's ready to move on from the?desktops and laptops that put the company where it is today. And Windows Phone 8 is Microsoft learning from its mobile OS?mistakes and saying "this time for real." The next Xbox isn't ready, but you'd better believe it's being conceived as the third piece in this puzzle.

Connecting the TV, PC and mobile (the so-called "three screens" strategy) has ever been a hope of Microsoft's, but it's not until now that the company's had the presence on the TV, the credibility on mobile, and the audacity to actually change what constitutes a PC. This year and the next will be a crucible for the company as it is forced to abandon traditions and partners, but if it's going to remain a force in consumer tech, these are necessary steps.

Plenty could go awry, though, and if one piece fails, the others are weakened. Windows 8 could fail to gain traction as a replacement for Windows 7, to which many millions of people and companies have only recently switched. Leaving behind 10 or 20 years of applications and hardware isn't something small businesses and casual computer users are likely to do.

Similarly, Windows Phone 8 will have a lot to prove when it debuts, first because the platform may have lost the support of many early adopters by not fully?upgrading devices currently running Windows Phone 7 and 7.5, and second because Microsoft may simply not have the superstar hardware that will be needed to take consumers' eyes off the next iPhone.

Google
The challenge Google will be facing is presenting a single aspect to the consumer. There are 10 different versions of Android out there by 10 different manufacturers, all getting updates at the whim of the carriers.?Meanwhile, the?Chrome browser?is coming out for iPad, and yet Google is making its own laptop OS and its own?Android tablets, and trying to one-up Facebook with a proprietary social network,?too? Every corner of the tech world seems to have a different Google, focused on a different task. Android 4.1 is the company's way of roping everything back together.

With one OS for tablets and phones, a plea to developers and partners to get on board, and a new tablet that sets a high bar for a budget product, Google is trying to unify a core brand after its initial meteoric rise and sprawl.

Another goal seems to be having one big Google that looks more or less the same wherever you go, and from whichever device you use. Chrome syncs tabs between devices, sure, but ultimately what Google wants is for you to think of Google as a place, not a set of services and websites. One place that you can view from multiple windows?? your phone, your TV, your PC and, at some point, your vision overlay device, such as Google Glass.

In order for that to happen, though, Google has to make its world look, act and respond in a similar way no matter where you are. No small task when there are huge differences in interface, connectivity and screen size. Not to mention hardware partners like Samsung and HTC putting custom interfaces all over the place. (Those overlays are probably not going to survive for much longer, by the way.)

Unfortunately for Google, too much of this is out of the company's control. The very nature of open systems like Android prevents Google from yielding to this kind of unifying influence, and companies may (as Amazon did) simply take what they want and tell Google to go fly a kite. So Google needs cooperation from its friends in turning its patchwork systems and platforms into a single powerful, useful and affordable one.

What will happen?
How it will likely play out is this: Google and Microsoft will both take a hit as they regroup and put their weight behind their new unifying efforts. This will be because they have to build up brand and trust over again.

Meanwhile Apple will continue to dominate in hardware, selling iOS and OS X devices by the million, but even its most dedicated customers must acknowledge that both operating systems aren't as fresh as they used to be.

So while it'll be another year of big sales for Apple, you'll see a creeping discontent with its software offerings. A full overhaul will be due ? maybe even overdue ? by June of next year, when Apple again gathers its global cadre of developers. But by that time, who knows? Maybe Google and Microsoft will have gotten their acts together, and the sparks of their own reinventions will be catching fire.

Yoani Sanchez: Cuba's Schools Are Failing Its Children

2012-06-30-SANY0646.jpeg

To brag about the achievements of our children and to crow about the good grades they got on a test are some of the pleasures that we can't forgo when the opportunity presents itself. June comes and we bump into a neighbor or a friend and the obligatory question is, "How is your child doing studying for the final exams?" The heat takes a backseat, and summer's apathy gains some mystery with the questions: Will they pass or fail? Will they be promoted to the next grade, or not? Long nights are spent solving math problems, the tutors can't keep up with so many students, and outside the schools they post the listings with the standings. The year-end vortex sucks us in... but this year there are several new features.

After testing one educational method after another, now several batches of students trained in these teaching "laboratories" have come to the university. I am referring to those who, from the first day of junior high school, faced those so-called "emerging teachers" at the blackboard; the same teenagers who, for years, received 60 percent of their classes through a television screen. My son is a good example of this. He benefited from the abandonment of the "high schools in the countryside" program -- excellent news -- but he suffered from the restructuring of the school program, plagued with misfits, lost hours, and the poor academic preparation of the educators. He has also been affected by the high desertion rates among the ranks of teachers whose salaries remain on the symbolic, if not the ridiculous, plane. Added to this is the presence -- excessive and continuous -- of an ideology that pervades even subjects and materials as far from the political spectrum as possible.

These winds are now bringing real storms. The lack of educational quality is bumping up against an increasing rigor in the final exams for high school. The result: entire schools where they are barely able to pass three or four students; complete groups who must cram and take the test second time, and even a third; parents on the edge of nervous collapse on learning that their "intelligent" child doesn't even know the Pythagorean theorem. To the lack of control comes the firm hand; the delirious educational system starts to see reason. But we're not talking about numbers here; it concerns young people whose learning has been far below what now appears on the test. People for whom volunteerism and school experimentation have been shown to fail.

Seagate Backup Plus

In a world teeming with portable hard drive choices, Seagate's GoFlex line is noteworthy for its versatility and sprightly performance. As successor to the venerable GoFlex line, the newly-minted Backup Plus line represents Seagate's next wave of drives. But not all successors are successes, and the new Backup Plus (1TB) ($139.99 direct) has some big shoes to fill. How does it fare? As it turns out, quite well. With brisk performance, a smart user interface that uniquely incorporates social networking, and its versatile USM (Universal Storage Module) adapter, the Backup Plus is a fully realized product that ultimately outshines the GoFlex line and, accordingly, is the rightful heir of the Editors' Choice for portable hard drives, previously held by the Seagate GoFlex Turbo (750GB) ($169.99 list, 4.5 stars).

Design and Features
Measuring 0.5 by 3 by 4.75 inches (HWD) with the USM (a proprietary interface) adapter (and 0.5 by 3 by 4.4 inches without), the Backup Plus's compact chassis is complemented by its tasteful, low-key aesthetic. While our test unit was black, it also comes in silver, blue, and red. Constructed entirely out of plastic, its primary visual flourish is the brushed faux-metallic finish on the lid, with the Seagate logo on its lower right side. While I prefer the sturdiness of a metallic drive along the lines of, say, the Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB) ($179.99 list, 4 stars), the Backup Plus is nonetheless a handsome drive that, at either 5.4 or 5.9 ounces (depending on whether the USM adapter is attached), can easily slip into a laptop bag without adding any noticeable heft.

The real draw is the USM adapter, which securely fastens to the rear of the drive in the same manner as the GoFlex line. As was the case with the GoFlex Turbo, the USM adapters are available for USB 3.0 (tested), FireWire, and Thunderbolt. While some may find fault with having to shell out the extra cash for additional adapters, it's nonetheless a cheaper option than purchasing a new drive altogether, not to mention the added convenience of using the same drive rather than transferring your data over another for the sake of employing a different connection method.

Once you plug the drive into a PC, you see a revamped version of Seagate's Dashboard program. The new Dashboard was clearly designed with simplicity in mind, as its clean interface presents three options: Protect, Share, and Save. The Protect category allows users perform a back-up manually or automatically, as well as create customized back-up plans. The Dashboard's true gem lies in the Save category, where files uploaded to a Facebook or Flickr account are either manually or automatically stored in a folder within the Backup Plus. Sure enough, after posting some test snapshots to my Facebook wall from my smartphone, they showed up in my Backup Plus. It's an innovative and simple method to store all your pictures or videos on a single location. The Dashboard's Share feature is somewhat less impressive, as it simply allows you to upload files from your Backup Plus directly to your Facebook account. While I typically appreciate the notion of skipping the Facebook interface to upload images, this function is not nearly as impressive as the Share feature.

The Backup Plus comes formatted for NTFS but can be reformatted for Macs. The only shortcoming in this regard is the "Protect" feature of the Dashboard, as it's not Mac-compatible. This isn't necessarily a fatal flaw since Mac users can perform the same task via Time Machine. Mac users can still utilize the rest of the Backup Plus's abundant set of features. In comparison, the Clickfree C6 Portable (1TB) ($150 street, 4 stars), is not compatible with Macs.

Performance
Although the drive we received from Seagate came equipped with USB 3.0, Seagate's USM adapters come in three flavors?FireWire, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.0. Using USB 3.0 (via the USM adapter's Micro B Port), the Backup Plus outpaced every portable drive in its class. It copied our 1.22GB test folder in a blazing 15 seconds, sprinting ahead of the Clickfree C6 (17 seconds) as well as the GoFlex Turbo (750GB) (18 seconds). Although a difference of a few seconds may initially seem negligible, the distinction becomes more pronounced when multiple large files are transferred. The Backup Plus's USB 3.0 speeds resoundingly trumped the WD My Passport Studio (1TB) using FireWire (31 seconds). Although USB 2.0 predictably yielded slower speeds for the Backup Plus (40 seconds), its USB 2.0 speed nonetheless surpassed that of the WD My Passport Studio (44 seconds) and the Clickfree C6 (41 seconds).

In the PCMark05 test, the Backup Plus yielded remarkable scores of 6,463 (via USB 3.0) and 3,125 (via USB 2.0), handily edging out the GoFlex Turbo's USB 3.0 score (6,025). The Backup Plus likewise yielded excellent results in the PCMark7 test, finishing with 1,449 (via USB 3.0) and 1,244 (via USB 2.0), easily edging out the Clickfree C6 Portable's scores of 1,406 (via USB 3.0) and 1,232 (via USB 2.0). The GoFlex Turbo's PCMark7 score of 1,498 with USB 3.0 was the lone instance in which the Backup Plus was outpaced, and since it was by a scant 49 points, it amounts to little more than a light drizzle on the Backup Plus's otherwise triumphant parade.

While the Seagate Backup Plus bears the imprimatur of the GoFlex line, its numerous attributes prevent it from standing in the lengthy shadow cast by its formidable GoFlex forebears. With its better user interface, faster performance, and innovative incorporation of social networking, the Backup Plus manages to outshine its predecessors, and sets the standard for future drives in the process, earning our Editors' Choice for portable hard drives.

Internet Marketing Tips That Garner More Leads Than Ever Before

Posted by cagoraman on 29th June, 2012 ?

Internet marketing has been around for a long time now and is growing with time. If you want to be successful with internet marketing, you need to learn the following techniques.

As an online marketer, you have to find fresh ways to get more conversions and get sales. So, not only do you have to get traffic, you also have to make sales from that traffic. Although you can get this done in numerous ways, using videos for product promotion is growing more and more popular every day. Videos are starting to become a mainstay on the web and many people, especially internet marketers are beginning to understand that they have real value. Although it has become quite commonplace, internet marketers use video marketing to get traffic to their sites and blogs. But you can go a step ahead and use videos on your sales page to talk about the product you?re selling. Being an online marketer, you can replace your normal sales copy with your video or you can use it as an addition to your promotion presentation. The reason that videos are so popular is because they are more interactive and visual than regular print copy. When you possess a video on your website that can actually show your customer the attributes of a particular product, it is easier to get their attention. This is because while watching a video, he/she uses all of his senses, making the experience more vivid and believable. There are times when people find video content easier to consume than going through long sales letters. Also, if your video delivers the message, a lot of your prospective customers won?t close it until it is over. A lot of leading online marketers are using video marketing quite successfully, why aren?t you? Once you begin your journey into a web business and making Internet marketing a part of it, then you will fast figure out the need to choose one thing out of several possibilities every single working day. That is part of the reason most new marketers have such a tough time with it.

But still, that is really no reason to stress over it because it is just a normal part of all business. We understand the feeling of wanting to know it all, but the really good news is you do not have to know it all, right away or even ever. It is normal to make mistakes, and that is something you can look forward to because they will never end. It is like anything else you start learning, in time the errors will be less and you will be more confident. Often times all you need to do is take enough action with any new method, or group of them, that you employ in your business. If you want to be successful at internet marketing, you have to develop a system for being better than the competition. Being an Internet marketer, sometimes it gets difficult to actually stay ahead of the other competitors, given that the World Wide Web is huge. The only method to deal with this is to make up your own unique selling angle so that you will be different from everyone else. Your USP should not only be about your product but also about how you present and market it. For instance, if you want to promote a relationship eBook, you might want to find out what makes your eBook more special and unique from the others. Once you find that unique viewpoint, sell it until the cows come home.

Your website traffic must be targeted traffic. Don?t believe the companies that promise to get you so much traffic for a certain amount of money. You want the traffic of interested people and not just surfing traffic.

In closing, internet marketing is very easy once you learn the steps to take. The tips that we discussed above give us a clear idea of what to expect and how to approach marketing online the right way.
