Visualized Hello Kitty paints CES 2013 in pink

Massive TVs, check. Slim laptops, check. Hello Kitty gadgets galore, check. So goes the typical CES checklist, and 2013 isn't any different. Several of the feline-adorned paraphernalia we saw on the show floor were repeats from last year, but we did manage to find a few new Kitty-branded appliances and accessories that are sure to give you an insulin shock. From toasters to Bluetooth speakers, go ahead and peruse the gallery after the break for probably the most amount of pink you'll ever see at an electronics trade show.

California meteorite reveals secrets thanks to crowdsourcing ( video)

Recently published research describes a collection of meteorite pieces that landed in California in April. The study came about through a group effort dubbed "crowdsourcing" by the lead scientist. ??

By Elizabeth Howell,?Space.com / December 20, 2012

Barely eight months after a fireball lit up California and Nevada skies, the first scientific paper is out examining the meteorites it left behind.

"It was done very quickly," said Peter Jenniskens, a meteor researcher who suddenly found himself managing a small army of volunteers when the Sutter's Mill meteor broke up April 22.

Dozens of scientists jumped to Jenniskens' aid as he?searched for meteorite fragments. But less publicized will be the volunteers who phoned in reports of meteorites, or sent in?pictures and video of the fireball?by e-mail.

Jenniskens' team?commandeered an airship?to search for fragments. Meanwhile, the team caught a lucky break ? Doppler radar information from nearby weather stations showed the track of the meteorite. Adding this data to the pictures and video sent in by volunteers, the scientists could reconstruct the impacting asteroid's early history. [Photos: Fireball Drops Meteorites On California]

According to Jenniskens, the paper, to be published Friday (Dec. 21) in the journal Science,?was made possible by the mass crowdsourcing effort that enabled a large amount of data to be collected in a short time.

"It's all very important, and it's fantastic how this came together," said Jenniskens, a meteor astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). "For me, it was personally very exciting."

Peeling back the years

The Sutter's Mill meteorite turned out to be a rare type ? a?carbonaceous chondrite?that contains information about the early stages of the solar system. The meteorite pieces originated in a space rock that was perhaps as much as 3.3 yards (3 meters) across.

A space rock is called an asteroid or meteoroid until it hits the Earth's atmosphere. The resulting fireball is then called a meteor until it hits the ground, at which point it is dubbed a meteorite.

The asteroid that would later impact California orbited the sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, making about three trips around our star in the time it takes Jupiter to orbit once. Such a ratio, known as a resonance, is common in the solar system ? some of?Jupiter's moons are in resonance?with each other, for example.

The asteroid's resonance was a little "off" from a perfect 3 to 1 ratio. At some point, Jupiter's strong gravity muscled the asteroid out of its normal orbit and sent it on a trip to the inner solar system. This pushed the asteroid into a new orbit that brought it in as far as Mercury's orbit when it got closest to the sun.

Report: Apple may build less expensive iPhone

(AP) ? A published report says Apple may introduce a cheaper iPhone in an effort to reclaim some of the sales that the company has been losing to less expensive handsets running on Google's Android software.

Wednesday's story in The Wall Street Journal speculates that Apple could lower the iPhone's price by equipping the device with an exterior that costs less the aluminum housing on current models.

The cheaper iPhone could come out as early as this year, or the idea could be scrapped, as has previously happened. The Journal cites unnamed people briefed on the matter.

Apple Inc., which is based in Cupertino, Calif., declined to comment.

Prices for the latest iPhones without a wireless contract currently start at $649. Apple, though, already sells older models at discounts.

Stolen WII trailers recovered, game consoles nowhere to be found ...

WIISEATAC ? Two stolen box trailers and a box truck used to carry 7,000 WII-U game consoles were recently recovered, but the expensive game consoles were gone, SeaTac police detectives said.

The trucks containing the WIIs were taken Dec. 16. from Seattle Air Cargo in the 19100 block of Des Moines Memorial Drive. Suspects?reportedly?used forklifts to load the trucks with at least 64 game?console?pallets before taking off, officials said.

The box truck was located in a Fife parking lot on Dec. 19. One of the?trailers?was recovered Dec. 30 in Auburn, with the logos and the identification?numbers?scratched off and new paint added to the truck. The remaining trailer was located Jan. 2 near Carson, Calif., with the truck?s logo painted over with white paint.

WII-U?s cost around $350 retail.

Detectives are working with the Los Angeles based Cargo Theft Task Force on the case, and have issued a reward of as much as $10,000 leading to the arrest and capture of the suspects. Individuals with information on the theft are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.

Even a reporter in 4-inch heels can ride this electric skateboard

8 hrs.

Skateboards can be tricky, but with the right design and a couple of motors ? not to mention huge wheels?? it was possible for the ZBoard team to turn a?terrifying?transportation device into a fun piece of gear even the most graceless among us can handle.

Like, say, you're a tired reporter who's been running around the Consumer Electronics Show all day long and you've got a fear of skateboards. The very last thing you should consider doing is stepping onto an electric skateboard capable of top speeds between 15 and 17 miles per hour. No, wait. Stepping onto this skateboard in 4-inchheels is the?worst thing you could possibly do.

So ... this is exactly what I did.

The skateboard, as I mentioned, is called the ZBoard, built by Intuitive Motion. It's an electric skateboard with two pressure-sensitive pads which allow you to control it.?The board accelerates into the direction of the pad you press. Because of the way the electrical motor works, pressing the opposite pad serves as a brake ? before eventually taking you in the opposite direction.

As someone who truly has zero experience on skateboards, I didn't expect to have a pleasant time on the ZBoard. To my surprise, I found that I got the hang of it within minutes. The real test of my acumen was trying it out with 4-inch heels.?And I passed.

The ZBoard comes in two flavors, a 35-lb.?Classic and a 28-lb.?Pro version. Each?can handle riders weighing between 100 and 225 pounds. The Classic's battery pack offers a 5-mile range, while the Pro can go for up to 10 miles. (The batteries take about 5 hours to fully charge, in case you're wondering.) If you decide to purchase a Classic model, you can always upgrade to a Pro later by purchasing the larger capacity battery and reaching for some basic tools, Larson tells NBC News. The upgrade kit is expected to cost about $300.

ZBoard's creators made it during their final year at the University of Southern California, as a senior project. Over the course of the two years that followed, they turned it into an actual product and debuted a prototype at CES 2012. In order to actually start producing the skateboard, Geoff Larson and Ben Forman used crowdfunding site Kickstarter. They set a goal of $10,000 and wound up collecting nearly $300,000 by the time everything was said and done. This amount included about 400 skateboard pre-orders (which were shipped out in time for the holidays).

The ZBoard Classic and ZBoard Pro can be pre-ordered for $649 and $949, respectively. They're expected to start shipping in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Man who rode horse while drunk gets time served

BUNNELL, Fla. (AP) ? A Florida man accused of riding his horse while intoxicated during a police chase has changed his plea and was sentenced to time served.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/VKmkMq) reports 29-year-old Charles Larkin Cowart pleaded no contest Tuesday to obstructing an officer without violence and interfering with railroad tracks. He originally pleaded not guilty to the Sept. 24 ride through Bunnell, north of Orlando.

Circuit Judge David Walsh also sentenced Cowart to three years of probation. He had been held in the Flagler County Jail on $7,000 bail.

Police say Cowart told them he was on his way to this grandmother's house. He refused their request to get off the horse and took off. Eventually, the horse became exhausted and Cowart ran. He was arrested a short time later.

(AP) ? The BCS title game's preliminary television rating was up from last season, but the lopsided score kept viewership down.

Alabama's 42-14 rout over Notre Dame drew a 15.7 overnight rating Monday on ESPN, the network said Tuesday. That's up 14 percent from last year's game, another blowout Crimson Tide victory, 21-0 over LSU. But it's down from the 16.1 for ESPN's first BCS championship two years ago, Auburn's win over Oregon that was decided in the final seconds.

The matchup between traditional powerhouses in Alabama and Notre Dame created the potential for a record-setting audience. But once the Crimson Tide went up 28-0 by halftime, viewers had reason to skip the second half.

The first half had an 18.2 overnight rating this year, significantly higher than the 16.6 for Auburn-Oregon. Typically viewership increases throughout a game if it is competitive. But on Monday, the rating peaked between 9 and 9:15 p.m. EST ? midway through the first half ? and decreased from there as Alabama pulled away.

Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets. ESPN expected full viewership numbers later Tuesday.
