European leaders add to rising fears of breakup

Aris Messinis / AFP - Getty Images

Greek Archbishop Ieronimos blesses the new caretaker prime minister, Panagiotis Pikrammenos, right, in Athens Thursday. Greeks will return to the polls next month after an inconclusive vote sent jitters across the eurozone.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

European officials are playing a dangerous game of chicken with Greece.

In an apparent signal to Greek voters, the head of the World Bank warned Thursday that if Athens were to depart from the common currency, Spain and Italy could well be the next dominoes to fall in Europe?s widening financial crisis.

After ousting the Athens government that agreed to deeper spending cuts in return for a financial lifeline, voters return to the polls in June after the winning parties failed to form a new government. Apparently hoping to convince Greek voters to return a pro-austerity government to power, European officials are now openly discussing the likely dire consequences if they don?t.

But the comments may have only served to heighten fears of a wider breakup of the eurozone should Greece exit the monetary union. ???

Investors backed away further from Spain's government debt Thursday, raising the country?s borrowing costs to levels that sparked the Greek debt crisis in the first place.

Bond buyers were also reacting to fresh economic data showing that Spain?s economy is beginning to shrink, which makes its existing debt load even harder to carry.

The growing crisis also has caused growing nervousness among U.S. investors. Since the inconclusive Greek vote May 6, the Dow Jones industrial average has fallen in seven out of eight sessions and was down again Thursday. U.S. banking giant JPMorgan Chase send another ripple of worries through the market May 10 when it said it had lost at least $2 billion in a failed attempt to hedge against European volatility.

The recession is also putting more pressure on Spain?s banks, which have been saddled with bad mortgages as the country faces a deepening housing bust. Last week, the government took over Bankia, which holds 10 percent of the banking system?s deposits, after it reportedly suffered an large outflow of deposits.

The news follows reports that depositors pulled another $900 million out of Greek banks on Wednesday, extending a capital flight that could bring down Greece?s banking system. The fear is that those worries spread among depositors in other countries like Spain where the banking system is already under pressure.

Until very recently, European officials were loath to even discuss the idea of Greece?s departure from the compact binding 17 nations with a common currency. For one thing, the treaty that created the euro has no provision for a member country to abandon the currency or for its expulsion by the rest of the monetary union.

But central bankers and officials of agencies like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund have begun to think ? and discuss ? the unthinkable. IMF chief Christine Lagarde warned this week that Greek's departure from the euro would be ?quite messy? and ?"extremely expensive."

Analysts who are looking at the potential impact say the losses and economic pain would be widely felt.

Replacing the euro with a new, devalued currency would wipe out much of the remaining assets on Greek bank books. Europe?s central bankers have already pulled back some forms of funding for Greek banks that have been hit hardest by withdrawals. Hundreds of billions worth of additional borrowing by Greek households and businesses would be in legal limbo.

Any new currency ? or a return to the pre-euro drachma ? would be massively devalued, by some estimates as much as half the value of a euro. That would help Greece?s economy eventually get back on a growth path because it would make its products and services cheaper for buyers spending dollars and euros. A week?s vacation in Crete would cost half the price of a comparable trip to Sardinia.

But Greek households and businesses would bear the immediate pain. Imported goods and commodities like oil would suddenly cost twice as much. Households and businesses making good on outstanding loans written in euros would see repayment double in local currency terms.

European officials who engineered the costly plan to ?save? Greece -- led by France and Germany -- would also feel the pain. Much or all of the more than $200 billion in loans already extended to the Greek government by the IMF, European Central Bank and Europe?s private banks would be at risk. That would mean explaining to French and German taxpayers what went wrong with the grand plan.

It would also raise the political costs of extending further bailouts to weaker, debt-burdened countries including Spain and Italy. As Greece demonstrates that a once-unthinkable exit from the euro is now possible, other countries may follow. If investors continued to shun Spanish and Italian government bonds and depositors flee their banks, the choice facing Europe grows more stark.

Worries about the fragmentation of Europe?s monetary union have already sapped business and consumer confidence and brought the region?s economy to a dead stop. Government austerity measures imposed on weaker economies are driving them deeper into recession.

As that recession spreads, the pain of Greece?s departure from the euro would be felt even more broadly, according to Michel Juvet, an economist at Bordier, a Swiss bank.

?At the same time we have China, which is slowing down very, very fast, we have the U.S. economy, which is losing momentum, and we have this global slowdown, ? he said. ?All economies are so connected that when one country or one big zone is suffering, the others are suffering as well. This is globalization.?

Others see the crisis in starker terms.

?This is phase two of the global financial crisis," said R. Seetharaman, CEO of Doha Bank in Qatar. "That?s the reality."

What's happening in the global markets and how are the Europeans handling the euro crisis? R. Seetharaman, Doha Bank CEO, provides perspective on Middle East banking mentality, summer gas prices, and global economic trends.

The SNES/NES FC Twin Video Game System Is What We Are Going ...

May 16 2012

Pretty much every single person on this planet had a gaming console of some sort when they were younger, and a number of the most popular systems were the Super Nintendo or even the older regular Nintendo. Something you should bear in mind is a large number of of the family?s wound up having both these gaining systems, and even if the gaming systems don?t work anymore you most likely still have the games. Many people do not believe that there is a choice anymore if their gaming console broke for them to play their games but you need to be aware there?s still a way to play these cartridges. In the following paragraphs we?re going to be looking at the SNES/NES FC Twin Video Game System, which will allow you to play Super Nintendo or Nintendo games. One of the greatest things about this product is that it plays both the game cartridges from Super Nintendo and the original Nintendo using the same device. I am sure you realize that older units will end up breaking in time, regardless of what you wind up doing, which makes this a great product for any person who still wants to play these games. Something you are going to find about this gaming system though is that the controllers that are provided are rather light, and because of this they can be awkward to play. Obviously a lot of you probably still have your old controllers and if not you can always find them on eBay relatively cheap. I should mention that the Tengen NES games such as Gauntlet won?t end up working in this console, but it is going to play official Nintendo games. The games which are actually developed by Nintendo are the most popular and the ones almost everyone has, which means this will not be a concern for the majority of people. You?re going to find one more facet of this game which can be a little annoying, and that?s that you can?t actually end up pausing the games for too long because it is going to cause problems. Amazon has loads of reviews relating to this product from individuals who have invested in it and you?re going to find out that based on many these men and women this is really a good console. When you check out the overall review of this item you?re going to find that many the 162 reviews have given this a four or five star rating out of a total five stars. A thing that may surprise you relating to this product is how inexpensive it really is since you can order this from Amazon at this time for just $41.84. You are also not going to need to worry about paying extra for shipping this item to your house as this is something that Amazon does for free. If you still have your old Nintendo games you may see that this will be a perfect addition to your Entertainment System. learn more about chess board or about chess pieces

Campaign Against Testing Excesses Gains Traction in Texas and ...

So far this year more than 400 Texas school boards have endorsed a policy resolution against the extreme over-emphasis on standardized state tests and all the resulting ill effects of that excessive emphasis.? Now their idea has been picked up nationwide, as organizations of educators, civil-rights groups, parent groups, and testing critics are signing on to a streamlined version of the Texas resolution. It leaves out some of the parochial Texas references but retains the essence of the policy argument, and we are pleased to present it here in full for your review:

?WHEREAS, our nation?s future well-being relies on a high-quality public education system that prepares all students for college, careers, citizenship and lifelong learning, and strengthens the nation?s social and economic well-being; and

?WHEREAS, our nation?s school systems have been spending growing amounts of time, money and energy on high-stakes standardized testing, in which student performance on standardized tests is used to make major decisions affecting individual students, educators and schools; and

?WHEREAS, the over-reliance on high-stakes standardized testing in state and federal accountability systems is undermining educational quality and equity in U.S. public schools by hampering educators? efforts to focus on the broad range of learning experiences that promote the innovation, creativity, problem solving, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and deep subject-matter knowledge that will allow students to thrive in a democracy and an increasingly global society and economy; and

?WHEREAS, it is widely recognized that standardized testing is an inadequate and often unreliable measure of both student learning and educator effectiveness; and

?WHEREAS, the over-emphasis on standardized testing has caused considerable collateral damage in too many schools, including narrowing the curriculum, teaching to the test, reducing love of learning, pushing students out of school, driving excellent teachers out of the profession, and undermining school climate; and

?WHEREAS, high-stakes standardized testing has negative effects for students from all backgrounds, and especially for low-income students, English language learners, children of color, and those with disabilities; and

?WHEREAS, the culture and structure of the systems in which students learn must change in order to foster engaging school experiences that promote joy in learning, depth of thought and breadth of knowledge for students; therefore be it

?RESOLVED, that [your organization name] calls on the governor, state legislature and state education boards and administrators to reexamine public school accountability systems in this state, and to develop a system based on multiple forms of assessment which does not require extensive standardized testing, more accurately reflects the broad range of student learning, and is used to support students and improve schools; and

?RESOLVED, that [your organization name] calls on the U.S. Congress and Administration to overhaul the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, currently known as the ?No Child Left Behind Act,? reduce the testing mandates, promote multiple forms of evidence of student learning and school quality in accountability, and not mandate any fixed role for the use of student test scores in evaluating educators.?

If you agree with this national resolution on high-stakes testing, you can sign on in support of it as an individual at:? http://timeoutfromtesting.org/nationalresolution/.>

Multidrug-resistant pathogens are becoming more frequent, and the few "last resort" treatments available for infections with these bacteria have also shown an increase in use in recent years, according to a study published May 16 in the open access journal PLoS ONE.

The authors, led by Makoto Jones of the Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System, investigated the use of two such antibiotics, polymyxins and tigecycline, in 127 Veterans Affairs medical centers between 2005 and 2010. They found that the overall use of these treatments was quite low, but that it did increase over the course of the study period. While this is the first study assessing use of these drugs in the United States on a large scale the trend is almost certainly not limited to the VA.

They also found that just eight facilities accounted for three quarters of all polymyxin use, and 26 facilities accounted for three quarters of all tigecycline use. Dr. Jones commented "The use of polymyxins, a class of relatively toxic antibiotics, has been increasing over time and appears to be a marker of very resistant bacteria. To address this potential harbinger of a growing epidemic, a clear strategy of infection control, antibiotic development, and antibiotic stewardship will be necessary."

Branding Your Products For Maximum Sales

Over the next few articles I write here ? we will be talking about branding during the entire process.

This is product branding (not ?You?re business branding ? different subject).? We all want our customers to know where to find more stuff to buy from us. If we don?t consider this process from the get-go, a lot of catchup work will need to be done later.

Catchup = re-doing your products? yuck.

Looking into the future? you will want to have a ?brand? that transcends all possible selling venues and ?be found? in the search engines.

This would include the Name of your business.? One that you can use on all the selling channels, your domain name and on your products.

You might also want to include a graphic that represents your public domain publishing business.

I have many different ?things? I ?do? for income generation? and not all of them have to do with publishing public domain content into products.

In this instance I want my eBay Id,? my Etsy store name, my graphics, my website etc. to all have the same name and a logo.

The reason we need to start thinking about this Right Now ? is this:

You want your customers to receive a product that they will show them how to always be able to find YOU and your products. And you want to have a brandable name and image that you can include in (an on) your products.

Why Do You Need It Now?

When you are creating the CD file that will be burned to your disk ? you will need all of this ?branding stuff? available at that moment.

The next article I will share with you will be about creating the CD? but unless you have all the pieces and parts ready ? you will not be able to finish the product.

Once you have your branding elements ? you will be able to use them on the CD label, The CD case, The eBay listing, An Ebay store, An Etsy store and your own website. Most importantly (regarding the actual product) you will need to have your branding in place.

Also ? When I edited the books for my first product? - I watermarked the last page of each book with a copyright notice (copyright the compilation) and a url to my website.

Do You Have A Domain (Website) Or Do You Even Want One?

I firmly (without hesitation) believe that YES ? you should have a website that is used for your public domain publishing business.

You may not have anything on it at first ? it may just have a link that directs anyone who finds it to your eBay store or Etsy store? yet it?s a start.

The domain name should be the name you use for you eBay Id and your Etsy store name.

For instance:

  • Brand ? Ancient Treasures
  • Url - AncientTreasures.com
  • eBay Id ? ancient_treasures
  • Etsy store name ? Ancient Treasures
  • Graphic Logo ? Treasure chest with the words ?Ancient Treasures? as the contents of the chest.

Of course ? these are just made up things (AncientTreasures.com is already taken).

An Example: Udderly Good Stuff has some fantastic graphics and branding which carries from her eBay store into her eBay listings.

She carries over to her Facebook page.

She uses her branding on her own blog.

She could (should) use her logo on Amazon as well:

Why Do We Need Branding To Maximize Sales?

Good question.

I?ll share a few scenarios:

1. I have this fantastic CD that I bought on eBay ? and my friend would like a copy.? I have no idea who I bought it from and I would need to go onto eBay and search for my purchases.

OR ? I could just look on the packaging and type the url into my browser and find the product.

2. I love the information that I received on the last CD I purchased. I?d like to see if the seller has more on this same subject.

3. I?m on Etsy and I see the store name ? I wonder if the seller has more stuff for sale elsewhere. I can type in that name on Google Search and find out that seller is ?everywhere?.

Do you see why I think you need ?branding??

?Don?t Be Tooooo Quick To Brand

I?ve changed my eBay store ID several times ? because I was toooo quick to select what I thought was the perfect branding.

I?ve selected my Amazon ID ? poorly ? because I was toooo quick and didn?t have a plan.

It does not matter to me WHAT you call yourself?? It does matter that you choose with a plan in mind.

I now have a plan in place:

I thought about how I was going to market these products.

I wanted others to view the branding ? and within a few seconds of viewing the graphic, the tag line and the name ? be able to visually see that my publishing is ?different, unique and will be something that they might like to investigate further.

Even though I have now drafted out a plan and have a domain name, graphic, tag line, switched my eBay Id (again), opened a New Etsy store? etc. ? I still am not totally POSITIVE that it?s perfect.

That?s okay. It doesn?t have to be Perfect.

The fact that you have a plan in place is all the perfection that is required.

The fact is this? everything can be changed. It would be a pain in the hind end? but it?s doable.? Nothing? is carved in stone.

You will thank me for this advice in the long run.? I just know it?

Warmer weather pushes Home Depot 1Q profit up

NEW YORK (AP) ? Home Depot said Tuesday that its first-quarter net income climbed nearly 28 percent as unseasonably warm winter and increased business from contractors and other professional customers boosted results at the world's biggest home-improvement company.

The company raised its 2012 net income guidance on the better-than-expected profit. But its revenue fell short of Wall Street expectations, sending its stock down 2.4 percent in trading.

Home Depot's results illustrate what's going on in the U.S. economy. While a prolonged U.S. housing slump has caused some Americans to cut back on spending on their homes, contractors and other professionals are starting to buy again. Confidence among U.S. builders rose to the highest level in five years in May, according to The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo builder sentiment index released Tuesday.

CEO Frank Blake said larger professional customers are coming back more quickly than smaller professional customers and do-it-yourselfers.

"This suggests a thawing process with the larger customers recovering first, with - hopefully - stronger recovery spreading," he said. "While there are some positive signs in the housing market, it is still under pressure."

The Atlanta-based company, which has more than 2,200 stores worldwide, also benefited from mild weather. This spring ? the fourth warmest in the company's history ? led to strong sales of products like lawn mowers and lawn products, grills, planters and other gardening and outdoor products. Plumbing and kitchen products were weaker.

Home Depot Inc. reported net income of $1.04 billion, or 68 cents per share, for the period ended April 29. That's up from $812 million, or 50 cents per share, a year earlier. The latest results beat the 64 cents per share that analysts polled by FactSet expected.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $17.81 billion from $16.8 billion. But that missed Wall Street's estimate of $17.89 billion. Revenue at stores open at least a year rose 5.8 percent, with the metric climbing 6.1 percent for U.S. locations. This figure is a key indicator of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed.

Total transactions rose 4 percent while the average ticket per customer rose 2 percent. The number of people spending less than $50, about 20 percent of sales, rose 2.4 percent. The number of people spending over $900, also 20 percent of sales, rose 6.7 percent during the quarter.

The company expects fiscal 2012 earnings of $2.90 per share, with revenue up about 4.6 percent. This implies revenue of approximately $73.66 billion. Home Depot previously predicted earnings of about $2.79 per share and a 4 percent revenue increase. Analysts had expected earnings of $2.90 per share on revenue of $74.06 billion.

Home Depot shares fell $1.21, or 2.4 percent, to close at $48.67 Tuesday. The stock has risen 16 percent since the beginning of the year.

Home Depot's smaller rival Lowe's Cos. reports quarterly results on Monday.

Google Picasa 3.9

Google's Picasa (free) continues to impress with the smoothness with which it lets you import, organize, and perfect your digital photos. I've praised the app in the past for its leading integration with its online component, Picasa Web Albums in previous reviews, but since the advent of Google Plus, the clarity of this integration has become muddied somewhat, with a new emphasis on Google Plus, which unfortunately comes at the expense of sharing to places more people care about: Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter. Despite that one self-inflicted injury, Picasa is still a great photo app (and basic video editor), and the new version adds a bunch of clever new effects, thanks to Google's purchase of (and shuttering of) the much-loved Picnik online photo editor.

As a standalone photo editing and organizing app, Picasa remains one of the best free options you can choose. Its face recognition, geo-tagging, effects, and text overlay tools are class-leading, as is the ease of using these them. Some have called into question Google's continuation of Picasa as a desktop app, though, so you may have to get it while you can. One piece of evidence for this is the new Creative Kit, an online photo editor that bears a family resemblance to Picnik. For now, though, let's tour what you get in this standout piece of software.

Signup and Setup
Google recently abandoned Picasa for Linux, with the last Linux version at 3 (and that's labeled "beta"), so none of the updates discussed here apply to that OS. The current version runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OS X (Intel only). The small 14.5MB Windows installer downloaded in a jiffy, though after installation it takes up 63MB on your hard drive. Note that the installer tries to switch your browser search engine to Google if you're using Bing, Yahoo, or another default search.

When you first run the app, you'll get only one choice: whether to use Picasa as your default photo viewer. Then along the lower-right side of your screen, you'll notifications as all the photos in all the likely folders on your computer are sucked into Picasa's database. In earlier versions, the initial run also asked whether you wanted Picasa just to scan your My Picture, My Documents, and Desktop folders or you whole computer for any added photos, but now it makes that choice for you, picking the former. On Windows, you'll see your iCloud Photo Stream if you've got that set up on your iPhone or iPad, but Picasa doesn't support iCloud on the Mac.

Interface
Picasa 3.9's interface remains largely similar to its preceding versions. Folders on your computer are shown in a panel on the left, as are entries for Albums, People, Projects. The folders are organized by year and sorted in chronological order. Buttons at lower-right let you show People, Places, tags, or photo info in a right panel. At center bottom are the buttons that let you share to Google Plus, email, export, star, or quick rotate. A neat little touch is the animated star that flies up and spins when you start a photo. At lower-left is a tray that helpfully lets you pick photos to work on temporarily. A new side-by side comparison view helps in choosing the best of a pair of images or edited versus un-edited.

Once you click into a folder, you'll get the shuttle control on the right instead of the standard scrollbar you see when you're in an album. I previously thought this shuttle was a nifty interface innovation, but now it just seems inconsistent within the program. Oddly, when working in the Recently Updated auto-Album, Picasa wouldn?t let me scroll to the bottom of the photo set, though I could see more thumbnails peeking up from below the window edge.

After I clicked into a photo, Picasa's editing tools appeared in a left panel, with a couple new additions. Now there are five tabs here, where formerly there were three. The new ones are for effects presumably brought over from Picnik. I still like the easy rotate and view zooming choices below the photo view, as well as the histogram. I could also show full EXIF info in the right panel. Nice clear buttons let you Undo any effects you've applied. And adding a caption (which will be transferred to the online gallery) was easy as pie from the space below the image.

Importing and Organizing
A prominent Import button gets you started, and Picasa helpfully adds a choice to the Autoplay dialog that pops up when you insert camera memory into your computer. Groups of shot thumbnails are grouped in the import dialog by time periods, similar to the Events in Apple iPhoto ($14.99, 4 stars), and you can see larger previews of the photos you're about to import on the right side of the window. To its credit, Picasa had no trouble importing camera raw files from my Canon DSLR?Windows Live Photo Gallery (Free, 4 stars) requires a codec installation for this, while iPhoto is equally adept out of the box. You can star or reject photos even before import, but you can't apply tags or preset edits to the group, as you can in many other photo apps. Windows Live Movie Maker lets you rate with one to five stars as opposed to Picasa's simple on or off star, but the single star will suffice for most users. You can also apply effects in batch, or even copy multiple adjustments from one image and apply them to a selected group.
