BlackBerry 10 developer toolkit released in beta, adds Native and WebWorks SDKs for app-building flexibility

Image

Will BlackBerry 10 be the hallowed OS that heals Waterloo's recent wounds or yet another RIM-shot to highlight its foibles? Only the fickle tide of consumer interest will certainly tell. But while the success and awareness of that new platform undoubtedly rests on the company's shoulders, a great deal of it also hinges upon crucial developer support. To spur things along in that latter department, RIM's released its developer toolkit in beta today. The tools, launched ahead of forthcoming BB 10 devices and the nascent ecosystem that they'll depend upon, are designed for flexibility, allowing third parties to choose between the Native SDK with its OS-specific APIs or the WebWorks SDK for HTML5 and CSS. The company's even gotten a head-start and partnered with the likes of Gameloft, which has already committed to optimizing 11 of its software titles for use on the platform. There's still a long road to US recovery ahead for the ailing BlackBerry brand, so let's hope this latest call-to-arms isn't lost on the dev community. Click on past the break for the official PR.

Boy, 11, urinates on $36K worth of Apple MacBooks

15 hrs.

He had the means and the opportunity, but we may never know the motive of an 11-year-old student who urinated on a couple dozen laptops left unattended at Upper Allen Township Elementary in Pennsylvania.

In a report now?bemusing Mac fan forums across the Internet, the Upper Allen Township Police Department states?that "the cart and computers were damaged beyond repair, resulting in the loss of over $36,000."?

The cart in question contained approximately 30?school-owned MacBooks, according to a police department spokesperson I spoke to, who couldn't tell me why the kid did it ? let alone how. ?Because, c'mon ? 30 MacBooks, even stacked, make for?a formidable amount of square footage to cover, especially for a kid.

Nevertheless, all MacBooks went down as a total loss, and John Brownlee at Cult of Mac educates us on the likely reason why.?

We can all surmise that urinating upon your Mac will not be covered by your AppleCare, but here?s an interesting question: If you stand up right this second, unzip your fly and hose off all over your MacBook, can you even pay Apple to service the machines? The answer is no, because Apple looks at micturated-upon MacBooks as a biohazard.?

Sure enough, not even dog urine is acceptable. I know this because the helpful woman who answered the phone at the New York City's Fifth Avenue?Apple Store told me that no, if my dog urinated on my MacBook, no Apple Genius would touch it. What's more, "biohazard" is the exact word she used, right before she?encouraged me to "Google" a?repair outfit that would deign to?do such dirty work. ?

Dog urination aside, there are other MacBook?pathogens that may surprise you. So if?you smoke, heads up.?Cigarette smoke-infused Apple products count as biohazards too, as Consumerist reported in 2009.?

For the crime of creating $36K in Apple biohazards, the boy in question was charged with institutional vandalism and criminal mischief. While the police spokesperson assures me that, contrary to some reports, the kid was?not arrested, his case was forwarded to the Cumberland County Juvenile Probation Department.

HBT: Morneau leaves game with wrist injury

As if falling to 6-16 with a loss to the Angels wasn?t bad enough for the Twins tonight, Justin Morneau exited the game with soreness in his surgically repaired left wrist.

Even worse, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports that Morneau is flying back to Minnesota to be examined by a team doctor, which isn?t a good sign considering the Twins are just beginning a six-game West Coast road trip that goes through Sunday.

Morneau has played 20 of 22 games after entering the season as a huge question mark following his concussion-related health problems and multiple surgeries. His production has been very inconsistent, including a .239 batting average and .313 on-base percentage, but he has shown good power with four homers and five doubles in 74 at-bats.

And now the Twins will wait to see if the former MVP has a third straight season ruined by injuries.

Switched On: Big kicks, not all for starters

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Image

The end of last week's Switched On left doubt for the future of dedicated devices that tread on the turf of smartphones. After all, funding is key to every major new product initiative and, despite the vast fortunes of many Silicon Valley engineers that have been accumulated via IPOs and acquisitions, few wish to take on the risk of fronting a new consumer device themselves.(In 2007, the handheld FlipStart PC was hatched from FlipStart Labs, funded by Vulcan Ventures, the investment arm of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.)

Most venture capitalists abhor the device business; it is a rare device that makes it to the spotlight of startup debutante balls such as DEMO, TechCrunch Disrupt, or Launch. Even most of the 94 companies at CES' Eureka Park were not developing end-user devices Where, then, can a device entrepreneur go for funding and pick up some publicity in the process?
