Updated at?12:06 p.m. ET: TOULOUSE, France -- A suspect wanted in connection with the killing three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school wounded three police officers in a shootout at a house in Toulouse, France, on Wednesday. He was identified as 24-year-old Mohammed Merah.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said the man, who was under siege by hundreds of police officers in an ongoing standoff, claimed to be a member of al-Qaida and that he had shot dead the four out of "revenge for Palestinian children." He is also suspected by authorities of having killed three French soldiers of North African origin last week.

French prosecutor Francois Molins later said the alleged gunman told police he had been to Afghanistan twice and had trained in the militant stronghold of Waziristan.

Molins also said Merah had planned to kill another soldier and two police officials imminently, and that his brother had been implicated in a network sending fighters to Iraq.

Police sources earlier told Reuters that another man had been arrested earlier Wednesday at a separate location in connection with the case.

Several hours after the initial raid, which took at about 3 a.m. local time Wednesday (10 p.m. ET Tuesday),?the alleged gunman threw a pistol out the window in exchange for a "communication device." However,?he was?believed to have other weapons including an AK-47 assault rifle.

The suspect said he would surrender in the "late evening" on Wednesday, although he had earlier promised to give himself up during the afternoon.

"He claims to be a mujahedeen and to belong to al-Qaida," Gueant told journalists in Toulouse. "He wanted revenge for the Palestinian children and he also wanted to attack the French army because of its foreign intervention."

Citing a source close to the investigation, Le Figaro newspaper (in French)?said Merah was?a French citizen of Algerian descent.

France 24?reported that Merah?had been tracked by French intelligence services for several years.

An official in Afghanistan said Merah escaped in 2008 from Kandahar prison, where he had been serving a three-year sentence,?Reuters reported - although this could not be confirmed.

'God is testing us'
As the siege continued, the Haaretz newspaper reported?that thousands of people had gathered at the Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem Wednesday for a joint funeral service for the victims, Rabbi Jonathan Sandler and his two sons, Gabriel, aged six, and Arieh, three, and Miriam Monsonego, aged eight.

"Our hearts are with the Jews of France and with the Ozar Hatorah institutions that took such a hard and painful blow. The pain is unimaginable, God is testing us,"?Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai said in his eulogy, according to the paper.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, campaigning for re-election in a presidential poll in five weeks time, has blamed racism for Monday's school attack. His handling of the crisis could be a decisive factor in determining how the French people vote. France has troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO forces.

"Terrorism will not divide France," Sarkozy said.?"We should not give way to discrimination or vengeance after shootings."

Gueant?did not say how?authorities had tracked Merah down.

However, a Le Figaro correspondent at the?site of raid reported that police received key tip from a local motorcycle shop in Toulouse a few days ago, according to NBC News. A salesperson?said a man came into the shop to ask how to neutralize the GPS system on his TMX scooter. The salesperson?thought this was?suspicious and reported incident to police, giving a?description of the suspect.

Gueant said that when police arrived?to raid the house?"the wanted individual shot at the door." NBC News reported the officers were members of an elite team known as RAID.

All French shooting victims shot in the head at close range, prosecutor says

One officer was injured in the knee and another officer lightly injured in ensuing exchanges of gunfire, Gueant said. A third officer was later reported to have been hurt.

Heavily armed police in bullet-proof vests and helmets cordoned off the area where the raid was taking place, in a suburb?only about 2?miles from the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school where Monday's shootings took place. NBC News reported that 300 officers were participating in the operation.

Suspect's mother called in
Merah's mother, elder brother and two sisters were detained by police on Tuesday and negotiators sought their help in trying to persuade him to turn himself in to the authorities.

"His mother said she did not wish to speak to him because she did not believe she could convince him and he would be deaf to her appeals," Gueant said.

The suspect inside the house said that he trained in the Pakistan and Afghanistan?and is affiliated with Forca lesa, an Islamic group dismantled by the French government. The group, which recruits young French to join the jihad,?is?considered?to be?dangerous.

On Tuesday, hundreds of?police officers?had spread out across southern France in the hunt for the gunman suspected in three deadly attacks.

Authorities suspect the school killer was also behind two recent attacks in the same area on French paratroopers that left three soldiers dead and one seriously wounded. The victims were of North African and French Caribbean backgrounds.

Sarkozy described the killer as a "monster."

"There are beings who have no respect for life. When you grab a little girl to put a bullet in her head, without leaving her any chance, you are a monster. An anti-Semitic monster, but first of all a monster," he said.

Monday's incident was?the deadliest school shooting in the country and the bloodiest attack on Jewish targets in decades. Schools across the country held a moment of silence Tuesday to honor the victims, who were heading to Israel for burial.

Gueant described the suspect as "someone very cold, very determined, very much a master of his movements, and by consequence, very cruel."

?Doctoring Up:? Realist painter, sculptor exhibits at Keuka | Keuka ...

Final in a series of three paintings.

The faces and forms of the people in his paintings look as though the individuals brushed into living color could step right off the canvas and into conversation.

They look, in a word, real. And that?s exactly how artist Lennie Muscarella of Victor wants it to be.

?If you were right next to it, it looks like a hodgepodge, but step back 10 feet and you?ve got a photograph,? he said, explaining that a number of contemporary painters in the same Realist style he aspires to are currently striving to master that technique.

Muscarella had lots of time to become intimately acquainted with the human face and figure. After studying biology at St. Bonaventure University, and a brief stint in the U.S. Navy, he entered dental school at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Self-portrait of Muscarella surrounded by the people and things he loves: a canvas of his wife during her battle with cancer, his Bible, paintbrushes, and clocks representing the passing of time. He calls this painting "The Human Condition."

Though he had given up art school to pursue a ?day job? that could support a family, Muscarella found himself rewarded, he said, because dental school turned out to be ?a very sophisticated art school.?

?They taught you how to paint porcelain and you have to know your colors inside out to match anteriors [teeth], and they hone your sculpting skills down to a tenth of a millimeter and bless them, they give you the privilege?not the right, but the privilege?to dissect the human body twice,? he said. ?As a figure painter, you can?t get any better than that.?

While he may be ?Dr. Muscarella? by day, in his free time he is simply ?lennie? the artist, and yes, he spells it lowercase, because painting such a long name with a brush involves more work. ?It?s much easier, if [I] use the one name,? he said.

In Muscarella?s mind, dental school was also a saving grace because had he instead entered art school in 1977, he would have confronted what he considers ?a horrible year, the post-modern movement, [which] we?ve suffered from the last 40 years. They threw away all the technique and all the skill level is gone.

?I?m so sick and tired of people signing toasters or toilets and calling it art. It?s the king and his clothes, and people have got to be told the king is naked,? he said. ?America?s got a wonderful crop of world-class figure painters on the East Coast right now making a comeback?they?ve held the fort up quite well.?

Muscarella will also show some of his drawings and sculptures at the Keuka exhibit, which continues through April 13. While he enjoys both sculpting and oil painting, casting sculptures is more expensive, so he tends to lean toward toward painting, he said.

?Painting is like playing the violin and sculpture is like playing the drums ? it?s more physical. There?s a hammer involved, welders,?tables with clamps on them. It?s very satisfying in its own way. I like both. But [sculpture?s] a lot messier.?

"The Huddle"

Muscarella will meet the public Thursday, March 22 during an artist?s reception, 4:15 ? 6 p.m. in Keuka College?s Lightner Gallery, where light refreshments will be served. Prior to the reception, Muscarella will give a demonstration of his oil painting technique, known as the old master?s method, to Keuka drawing and painting students taught by Melissa Newcomb, assistant professor of art. And while it would be impossible to finish a work that typically takes 60 to 90 hours in an hour-and-a-half, Muscarella plans on giving them a significant taste in the science of it.

To that end, he will dissect one of his portraits in progress, creating a four-part cross-section on linen canvas where one quarter of the portrait is simply his drawing, and the next is coated with a sepia-tone wash of diluted oil paints. The final two quarters are in stages he calls ?underpainting? and ?almost done.? During the demonstration, Muscarella will take each cross-section to the next stage of completion. The canvas-in-progress will be put on display during the reception.

?It?s the process of making art, the doing that?s important,? Muscarella said. ?Once one [work] is done, it?s time to move on to the next, like a rainbow in the next field. You never quite get there, and you?re always chasing it.?

organization, organize, craft room, scrapbooking, family, kids | The ...

Just about everyone does one craft or another.? Knitting, scrapbooking, card making? What?s the one thing they all have in common?? They can easily take over our living space with their various tools, supplies, and materials.? Keeping your craft supplies in order not only helps maintain your sanity and the appearance of your home, it also helps keep your materials in good working order.? In addition, it allows you to sit down and complete a project without having to dig out first.? The best part is getting your craft area organized doesn?t have to take a lot of time or money.

?

Keep reading for some quick and easy tips and tricks to help you maintain order wherever you complete your craft projects.

?

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • Do you have adequate workspace?
  • Do you have adequate storage space?
  • If you can?t finish your project today, do you have space to leave the project out?
  • How easy is it to access and put away your supplies?

?

Storage and Work Space:? Start by assessing the amount of space you have to work with.? If it?s just a closet, consider installing a closet system with a workspace so that you can craft and then simply close the doors to have it all out of sight.? The Container Store (www.thecontainerstore.com) sells Elfa systems that can be customized to your space and craft.

?

If you have a whole room, picking out storage products is a little easier.? Browse design websites for inspiration, and if your hobby has a magazine, purchase a copy or two for ideas.? Consider purchasing some repurposed furniture such as library catalog card files to house your smaller tools.? Visit yard sales, flea markets, and browse Craigslist for used furniture you can refinish and recycle.

Consider browsing your home for furniture.? A hutch from the dining room can be turned into a craft supply cabinet, an old kitchen table can be used as a work surface and even rolling tool carts can be used for portable supply storage.

?

If at all possible, look for solutions that allow you to put uncompleted work away.? But furniture pieces aren?t the only way to accomplish this task. Having the right storage pieces for similar items makes cleanup a cinch!

?

Storing Your Supplies:? Once you have your basic furniture structure in place, and then consider your organizational accessories.? Again, these don?t have to be specialized or expensive items.? These products will be the key to keeping your space organized.

?

Visit your local dollar or superstore to find items that can be used to store craft supplies. Here are some ideas:

????? Pails-Hang from the bottom of a shelf with a mug hook for marker/scissor/pen storage.

????? Garbage pails-Use to house rolled wrapping paper, or rolls of fabric.

????? Tackle Boxes-Use to hold beads, thread, buttons, etc.

????? Ball Jars-Use to house anything small.? (Then store the jars on a small shelf with a tiny ledge to prevent jars from falling off.? This gives you a visual of the items in the jars and easy access.)

????? Food Storage Containers-Great to for preventing paints from spilling and making a mess.

?

Keep the Best:? Once you have all of your organizational pieces in place, make sure that you get rid of any supplies that are too old or too small to use (such as scraps of paper).? Donate anything that is usable, but you no longer want or need to a local school art department.? Then categorize, contain and label the remaining items.? Purging the items that you are keeping ?just because? gives you the space for new and better items.

?

Other Things to Consider:? Safely is an important issue when designing and organizing craft spaces.? Make sure you have adequate light to see what you are doing.? Adhesive LED lights are an inexpensive option for adding light where there are no existing fixtures.? Also, make sure that any sharp tools like scissors or craft knives are well out of reach of children.? If you are using knives or needles in your craft make sure to have a first aid kit nearby.

?

You want your craft space to make you happy.? If possible, paint it a color you enjoy.? Frame or display some of your previous masterpieces in the space and put up a bulletin or magnetic board to capture inspirations from magazines or photos.

?

A craft space can be located any where in your home.? The most important thing to remember is to make it functional and FUN!? If you just don?t think you have the time or inspiration to create your perfect craft space contact a professional organizer who will assist you with the task.

In new book, relativity goes to the dogs

Matt Milless

Physics professor Chad Orzel and his dog Emmy go in search of the bacon boson and other scientific mysteries ? a quest documented in Orzel's latest book, "How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog."

By Alan Boyle

Teaching relativity to a dog may sound like a hopeless mental exercise, but physics professor Chad Orzel says it actually makes the job of teaching relativity to humans easier.

"It makes the whole thing seem much more approachable," Orzel explains. "If you think like a dog, dogs have fewer preconceptions about how things work."

And Orzel's dog, a German shepherd mix named Emmy, won't let him get away with hand-waving gobbledygook. "A lot of the things that she interjects with, those are points where people reading along would say, 'Wait a minute! That doesn't make sense!'" he said.

Of course, Orzel isn't really teaching relativity to his dog. Rather, Emmy serves as the straight man ? er, dog ? for a scientific dialogue that makes the equations go down more easily. Such dialogues are standard rhetorical devices that go back to Democritus, Socrates, Plato and all those cats in ancient Greece. It's a technique that Orzel used to crowd-pleasing effect in his 2009 book about quantum mechanics, "How to Teach Physics to Your Dog" ? and now Emmy is back for more in the newly published sequel, "How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog."

"If you've already talked about quantum physics, relativity is the obvious way to go," Orzel told me. "It's the other great theory of modern physics."

Orzel, who teaches physics at Union College in New York, said that Albert Einstein's special and general theories of relativity can actually be boiled down to one sentence. "All of the weird stuff you hear about E=mc2, clocks running slow when they move, time moving at different rates near a black hole ... all of that weird stuff is just a consequence of the fact that the laws of physics do not depend on how you're moving," he said.

Basic Books

"How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog" isn't just for dog lovers ... or relativity lovers, for that matter.

And if there's one thing dogs know a lot about, it's moving. So Orzel casts his explanations of the weird stuff in terms a dog just might be able to understand: For example, when he refers to the speed of light in a vacuum as remaining constant, no matter how it's measured in a moving frame of reference, he doesn't use the standard example of moving rocket ships. Instead, Orzel talks to Emmy about bunnies, cats and dogs in motion.

At times, Emmy tries to jump into the driver's seat with her inquiries into the Unified Theory of Critters, or her plans to build the Superconducting Kibble Collider and search for the bacon boson. ("It's responsible for making other kinds of particles yummy," she explains in the book.) Then it's Orzel's job to tug on the leash and get Emmy's head back in the game. And after a chuckle or two, we're ready to press on as well.

"Because of the dog, I'm able to get away putting some stuff in there that I otherwise wouldn't be able to," Orzel told me. "You can put in some heavy stuff and lighten the tone quite a bit."

That's not to say Orzel has turned relativity into a romp in the park. The book still poses quite a few mental agility trials?? particularly when it comes to the counterintuitive aspects of relativistic phenomena, such as the famous "twin paradox." But as much as possible, Orzel highlights the concrete, real-world examples of relativity at work, such as the fact that a height difference of just 12 inches has an ever-so-slight impact on timekeeping, due to the relativistic effects of our planet's gravitational field. The same effects have to be accounted for in GPS satellite navigation systems.

"That shows that this isn't purely some incredibly exotic thing," Orzel said. "It's something that happens in everyday situations. It's just that the effects are usually too small to measure."

So now that Chad Orzel and his dog Emmy have run circles around the two great pillars of modern physics ? quantum mechanics and relativity theory ? what's next?

"We'll have to see what the dog wants to talk about," Orzel joked. "A few people have asked about statistical physics, but I'm thinking I don't know if even the dog wants to do that."
