Stuffed noses and open mouths

For how long did you have a blocked nose last year? graph of japanese statisticsWith hay fever season almost upon us, this seems like quite a good time to take a look at a recent survey from iShare into blocked noses.

Demographics

Over the 7th and 8th of February 2012 1,086 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.6% of the sample were male, 33.5% in their twenties, 33.3% in their thirties, and 33.1% in their forties.

I get a badly-stuffed nose for about a month thanks to hay fever, and for a few days here and there throughout the year for probably mildly-allergic reactions to unidentified agents. My pet hates about a blocked nose are blowing so hard I get a nosebleed or at the other extreme not blowing enough and dripping snot onto desks and tables. Furthermore, on bad days all the phlegm going down my throat upsets my stomach.

Essential Leadership Skills That Many People Overlook | Self ...

Few would disagree that leadership is one of the most crucial factors when it comes to the success of any organization, especially a business. A lot of people, however, overlook certain vital qualities that an effective leader should have. If your goal is to become a stronger leader, it?s important that you enhance all of the necessary attributes for this role. In this article we are going to be discussing a number of crucial leadership skills that are usually ignored.

A great leader needs to be able to listen as well as talk. A lot of leaders are merely interested in persuading other people how amazing their vision is and getting them to agree. Leaders who seldom listen to anyone are not typically well liked, even if they are able to surround themselves with ?yes? men and women. When you don?t ask anyone else?s viewpoint, you may miss vital signs about what?s happening in your business. If you want the help and cooperation of your team, you must spend some time to understand their needs and worries. This doesn?t necessarily mean you can please everyone at all times, but you should at least be more than willing to listen and make yourself familiar with their concerns. Martin has been writing about such topics for various years now and he has of late started to educate folks on the subject matter of Simple Emini Futures Day Trading Strategy.

Efficient leaders are both decisive and careful -they must at times make tough decisions quickly. There are various ways to make decisions, and some people are more instinctive about it while others like to collect as many facts as possible. The best way is often a combination of the two. You want to steer clear of the extremes of making abrupt decisions without knowing all the facts, and being indecisive and wishy-washy. A leader with issues making decisions is most likely not going to be a leader for very long, since others are looking to you for guidance. Even though you have to take a while to decide, you never want it to seem like you?re attempting to avoid the issue. On the other hand, if you make decisions on impulse, without doing enough research and giving the matter more than enough thought, you are likely to make costly mistakes.

As a leader, it?s crucial that you become very familiar with the abilities, strengths and weaknesses of everybody on your team. Besides their skills and experience, you must know something about them personally too. You can actually connect with people better, and delegate tasks more effectively when you really know them. A leader who is out of touch with people around him will have difficulties inspiring support and commitment. Nobody wishes to be seen as merely a cog in the machine, so make sure you treat everyone as an individual. If you know your staff well, you can make the most of each person?s talents and avoid having their shortcomings create problems

There are quite a few qualities that an excellent leader should have, and the above are a few of the ones that are often overlooked. Everybody has to create an individualized approach to leadership that fits with their personality and goals. A few leadership attributes, though, are universal, and if they?re not shown it ends up damaging the business.

intentional cross-cultural relationships as a form and practice of ...

how about the idea of intentional cross-cultural relationships [not dating, simply talking friends here] as a form and practice of worship?

that was one thing i walked away with from a conversation with an australian [of all people, ha ha] here in philly where my beautiful wife Val and i currently live and minister? and it wasn?t anything he said specifically but just stuff i picked up and grabbed on to from hearing some of his story?

i walked away with a desire and intent to read more books written by non-white people [as probably every book i read is written by a white person except maybe the Bible, depending on who is making the movie] and to build more friendships with non-white people?

which, very much like B.E.E. has already caused a bunch of people to roll their eyes or stop reading altogether, but if you are in a multi-cultural community [as we are - white, latino and african-american who as Trevor Noah says "are not really african, but we'll play along"] and you are not making non-white friends naturally, then you probably need to get a little bit intentional for it to happen at all.

so that was the plan and i started keeping my eyes open and making connections with friends of this guy via email who we will hang with sometime, but an incredible thing happened? while that was all the intentional idea in the background, God put me in a situation/space with one of the Latino guys we have relationship with as an organisation and the second time we were in the same work space i found myself thinking ?i want to spend time with this guy? and NOT AS A LATINO GUY TO SPEND TIME WITH but just as a cool guy. someone i want to get to know and hang out with and get addicted to card Golf or whatever we can find in common to do together.

then this morning i was in a meeting with an older pastory guy [well "bishop" to be exact which is normally something that would get my allergies going] and he gave me the book he?s written which i look forward to reading and i?m thinking ?i could be mentored by this guy? and so the kind of desired intentional thing i was seeking to go and make happen just kinda pitched up [accidentally? not with the God i serve] and that is an incredible start to what i hope will end up being some authentic and stretching and incredible relationships?

how about you? what are your thoughts on pursuing intentional cross-cultural friendships if you don?t naturally have and on reading stuff written by not the usual people you read/are influenced by?

i said this before and i think i still pretty much believe it ? that if everyone in your church or small group looks like you, you?re probably in the wrong place. our tendency is to commune with people who look and sound and act like us because that is a lot more comfortable. but also creates a comfortable space where less learning is likely to happen.

look at Jesus and the people he picks as His disciples. just one example is Simon the Zealot and Matthew the tax collector and i wish we had the records to show how Jesus paired the two of them together when He sent them on mission trips, because that illustrates the kind of humour that i imagine Jesus to have had. it is impossible to read the bible and come up with the profile of ?the person God used? or ?the person God spoke through? ? such completely different people which is why we have stories of ?iron sharpening iron? and not ?kittens cuddling with kittens? or something like that.

i?m ready for some different kinds of people in my life ? speaking into my life, mentoring, challenging, inspiring? and i?m excited that it looks as if God has started indicating some of who those are going to be.

    let?s worship.

The Science and Art of Neandertal Teeth [Slide Show]

    Features | Evolution

The fossilized teeth of the Neandertals are scientifically informative--and pleasing to the eye

    Image: ? Luka Mjeda

Of all the human ancestors represented in the fossil record, Neandertals are the best known. A significant proportion of what scientists have learned about the Neandertals is based on a set of remains that the Croatian paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanovi-Kramberger recovered between 1899 and 1905 from a rock shelter in the town of Krapina, some 60 kilometers north of Zagreb. The Krapina sample dates to between 120,000 and 130,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, and includes multiple representatives of nearly every bone and tooth of the body.

Early on, Gorjanovi-Kramberger took an interest in the teeth from Krapina, noting anomalies such as taurodontism, in which the pulp chamber expands into the roots. First described from the Krapina remains, taurodontism turns out to be common in Neandertals, although not exclusive to them. Since Gorjanovi?s time, studies of the more than 275 Neandertal teeth from Krapina have yielded key insights into Neandertal life history. For example, analysis of enamel growth lines has shown that Neandertal wisdom teeth erupted earlier than those of modern humans, coming in at age 15 instead of 18 or older. Other studies of tooth enamel document irregularities related to periods of metabolic stress from starvation and disease. That the Neandertals lived through the stress attests to a keen ability to cope with severe hardships. Aspects of the Krapina teeth, such as the shovel shape of the incisors, and surface features of the canines, bicuspids and molars, link the Neandertals to modern humans and Homo heidelbergensis, their ancestor in Europe. The overall size of the teeth of the adults Neandertals at Krapina, meanwhile, reveals differences between males and females similar to those seen in modern Homo sapiens men and women.

? View a slide show of Neandertal teeth

Analyses of the Krapina teeth have also illuminated behavioral practices of the Neandertals. Grooves on the necks of some bicuspids and molars show that they used toothpicks to dislodge food stuck between these teeth. Studies of the wear patterns reveal that Neandertals wore down their front teeth more than their cheek teeth?indicating they used their incisors and canines as a third hand to grip and manipulate objects. Scratches left on the lip face of the same teeth provide further evidence for dental manipulations. Many of the incisors and canines from Krapina show numerous scratches on the front (lip-facing) surface?the result of tools raking across the teeth during life. The obliquity of these scratches, running from the upper left to lower right of the tooth, hints that Neandertals were predominantly right-handed.

Gorjanovi was the first to look at Neandertal teeth in new ways by publishing a series of radiographic images in 1902, just seven years after Wilhelm R?ntgen?s discovery of x-rays. Recently, Zagreb-based artist Luka Mjeda photographed all the original teeth for a permanent record as part of an open-source platform for information about Pleistocene humans called the NESPOS project (www.nespos.org). Jakov Radov i of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb led the Krapina part of the project. Mjeda later manipulated the photographs to create remarkable, artistic renderings of the tooth surfaces. Although Gorjanovi probably never considered the aesthetics of the Krapina teeth, we think he would have appreciated this new view of them through the eyes of an artist. Mjeda and I recently mounted an exhibition of the images in Lawrence, Kansas. They are available for purchase from TeethasArt@gmail.com

What Did Reese Witherspoon Say About Chris Brown's Assault on Rihanna?

Rihanna's recent musical collaboration with Chris Brown has spurred criticism across the media and celebrity spectrum. Reese Witherspoon has even weighed in.

The This Means War actress star appeared at the World Conference of Women's Shelters in Washington, D.C., as part of a partnership with the Avon Foundation.

There to raise awareness about domestic violence, the mother of two say she is making sure her kids - Ava, 12, and Deacon, 8 - learn an important lesson.

    A Reese Witherspoon Image

She openly discussed how she actively talks to her two children about domestic violence, and that Chris Brown and Rihanna are part of that conversation.

"We talk about domestic violence and what that means," Witherspoon, 35, said.

"Although the concept is somewhat foreign to them, they're starting to understand that this happens to families in our country and all throughout the world."

She also doesn't shelter them from the realities of Brown's assault on Rihanna: "My daughter knows what happened to her. My son knows as well."

"We talk about what is abuse. It's important to talk to our daughters and our sons at an early age about what's appropriate and what is absolutely not acceptable."

Judging from mom's open and mature communication style - not calling anyone out while still not mincing words on a difficult topic - Ava and Deacon are lucky.

    Frontal attack or stealth?

    Monday, February 27, 2012

Why is it that Mycobacterium tuberculosis can cause tuberculosis with as little as 10 cells, whereas Vibrio cholerae requires the host to ingest up to tens of millions of cells to cause cholera? This is the question that two research teams, from the Pasteur Institute, in France, and the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia and the University of Lisbon, in Portugal, answer in the latest issue of the journal PLoS Pathogens. The researchers show that bacteria that are able to invade and/or destroy cells of the host's immune system have higher infectivity, whereas those that are more motile, multiply faster and communicate with each other are less infectious, that is, it takes more bacterial cells to trigger an infection. These findings help understand the patterns that shape infectivity of bacteria, and contribute to more accurate predictions of how emerging pathogens may evolve, with implications for public health.

Despite the multitude of mechanisms that pathogens use to exploit its human host, the research teams of Eduardo Rocha, in France, and Francisco Dion?sio, in Portugal, set out to find common themes in the mechanisms used by distantly related bacteria. The researchers trawled through scientific literature on 48 bacterial pathogens. They related several bacterial features (motility, interactions with the immune system, growth rate) with their value of ID50 ? the minimum number of bacterial cells that is required to trigger an infection in 50% of infected hosts.

The teams found that bacteria that are able to destroy or subvert phagocytes ? the cells of the immune system that engulf bacteria ? have ID50 of around 250 cells. The remaining bacteria, meanwhile, have ID50 values of around 30 million ? they are much less infectious. These bacteria rely on high turnover (or growth), are very motile, and are capable of communicating with other bacteria, through the mechanism of quorum-sensing.

Says Joao Gama, first author of the paper, "In the "arms race" between disease-causing bacteria and the hosts they infect, some bacteria act through frontal attack, whereas others operate through stealth, manipulating the host's immune system. Many others are somewhere in between. Our findings suggest that the low ID50 (more infectious) bacteria be classed as working by stealth; the high ID50 bacteria are those that resort to frontal attacks".
