Is Home Staging Still Worth It? | Home Decorating | Staging Real ...

Home staging has been promoted in the mainstream for a couple of years now, and the nice thing is, it?s still a relevant tool when selling a home. Home staging works to make your home more appealing, which in turn means it a) sells faster, and b) sells for a higher price than most non-staged homes.

However, many people don?t completely understand what home staging is. Staging is a relatively simple concept that involves some key principles to make it work.

First, de-clutter. This is the essential rule of home staging. If you do nothing else, do this when selling your home. The kind of de-cluttering I am referring to is more than just clearing the papers off your desk, though that?s recommended too. The kind of de-cluttering required for a home sale is deeper. It requires you to evaluate every room in your home and eliminate everything you no longer absolutely need. Beyond spring cleaning, even, this is about paring down your junk to the bare minimum. Then, in home staging, you take it another step further. To truly achieve the feel of a staged home, you need to de-personalize it.

De-personalizing a home involves removing things that you don?t want to get rid of, but that serve to remind potential buyers that this is your home. These include family photos or personal mementos or knickknacks of various kinds. The goal when selling a home is to make the buyer feel at home in your home: to create a space that they can imagine themselves inhabiting. But pictures of your family and highly personal items can diminish that, which is why they need to be packed up. Consider it a head-start to your much larger packing job once the home sells. But don?t store the packed boxes in the garage, these need to be gone, too.

]]>

Other than maybe a couple of storage boxes, it?s best to find somewhere off the property to store anything you don?t want to be around while your home is being shown to buyers. Since garages, spare rooms and storage space are features buyers appreciate in a home, you don?t want to over-fill these spaces with your boxes. Some sellers rent storage space. Others make use of friends or family?s storage space. Whatever you do, stick to the rule of keeping out the clutter in your home for sale, no matter what.

Other than boxes packed with family mementos, you may want to consider moving out appliances you rarely use but aren?t ready to part with. Having clear counters in the kitchen is another imperative. Same goes for the cupboards. Don?t empty them, as an empty house is almost harder to sell than a crowded one, but keep everything, everywhere, neat, tidy and sparse.

Another aspect of home staging is often to modernize the look of the home. Many home-stagers, when they?re given the budget to go all-out on a home, rearrange and even replace furniture to give the home a better look. Usually, home stagers are interior design professionals. Sometimes they even own their own selection of furniture and art to use for staging, or have an arrangement with a local furniture company. If your budget just doesn?t allow for this, try to do it yourself by keeping bright and easy in mind. Your goal is to insure that one can easily move around a space, and nothing is awkward about the room. Consider getting together with some friends are rearranging your furniture until you get something everyone agrees looks best. Remember, this isn?t how you?d arrange it for your own convenience or livability. This is simply to make it look good at first glance.

Speaking of first glance, those first impressions are really the most important when showing your home, as a buyer makes a decision about whether a home is on their ?maybe? list or ?no? list within less than a minute of first seeing the home. Details within the home only minimaly impact that first impression. That means that the outside of your home needs to be in ship-shape, too. A clean and well-groomed yard is what you need.

The other first impression, often overlooked by the home-seller, is smell. Here?s where your friends can come in handy again, because while you are used to the unique smells of your home?so much so that you probably don?t even notice them?friends coming over will easily be able to give you their first impression of your home?s smell. If you have pets, or smoke, or even cook at home, the smell of your house will tell the story. Your goal should be to make that story a pleasant one. If it isn?t, then whip out the baking soda and sprinkle it into your carpets. Leave it sit for a few hours before vacuuming. Consider having furniture and drapes professionally cleaned. If you want to make a bigger olfactory impression, consider baking cookies on showing day and leaving them out for viewers. Some people recommend just having some mulling cinnamon sticks on the stove, but this may make buyers think you?re trying to hide something. A fresh cookie on the other hand, will give them something to remember your house by. Don?t forget some bottled water sitting in a bucket of ice. Now your home staging is complete, and if you did it right, you won?t need to put up with too many showing dates, and will be able to enjoy viewing other people?s homes as you get ready to buy anew.

[Women's Basketball] Mount Mercy wins 10th straight away from ...

Photo of Mount Mercy women's basketball player Emily GreinerCLINTON, Iowa ? The Mount Mercy women?s basketball team might want to think about wearing its road blues during its upcoming homestand after the 15th-ranked Mustangs got their 10th straight win away from home, defeating Ashford, 69-58, in Midwest Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday at Kehl Arena.

Mount Mercy is a perfect 7-0 on the road in conference play this season, and hasn?t lost away from Hennessey Recreation Center since Nov. 26 at the Radisson Roseville Classic. The Mustangs (18-7, 10-3 MCC) have lost three straight at home, however, but can end that dubious streak with a win against Waldorf this weekend.

Mount Mercy shot 55 percent from 3-point range (11-of-20) in Wednesday?s win and outrebounded Ashford, 30-26. Senior guard Emily Greiner scored a game-high 25 points and knocked down five more treys to give her 79 this season, which is tied for fourth on Mount Mercy?s single-season chart. She is second in school history with 239 triples and currently ranks 12th all-time with 1,445 points.

Senior guards Laura Lippert and Micha Mims each hit three 3-pointers and joined Greiner in double figures. Lippert had 14 points, while Mims finished with 12. Mims also collected seven rebounds and three steals Lippert blocked three shots and senior guard Becca Lampe dished out five assists.

There were three Saints in double digits, led by Courtney Panus? 17 points. Gaby ayon chipped in 12 points, Patricia Ramos 11. Panus and Deana Bledsoe snagged six rebounds apiece and Madison Wagner handed out six assists for Ashford (9-15, 5-8 MCC).

Egypt's army, police blamed for deadly soccer riot (AP)

CAIRO ? Scores of Egyptian soccer fans were crushed to death while others were fatally stabbed or suffocated after being trapped in a long narrow corridor trying to flee rival fans armed with knives, clubs and stones, in the country's worst ever soccer violence that killed at least 74 people, witnesses and health officials said Thursday.

The tragedy Wednesday evening ? which followed an Egyptian league match between Al-Masry, the home team in the Mediterranean city of Port Said, and Al-Ahly, based in Cairo and one of Egypt's most popular teams ? was a bloody reminder of deteriorating security in the Arab world's most populous country, as instability continues nearly a year after former President Hosni Mubarak was swept out of power in a popular uprising.

It was also the deadliest soccer violence worldwide since 1996. One player said it was "like a war."

Egyptian activists have accused the police and military of failing to intervene to stop the mayhem.

On Thursday morning, dozens of angry protesters sealed off Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising that toppled Mubarak, while others blocked the street in front of the state TV building in downtown Cairo ahead of planned marches later in the day to the Interior Ministry to denounce the police force.

The melee at the stadium in Port Said erupted when Al-Masry fans stormed the field following a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly. Al-Masry supporters, armed with knives, sticks and stones, chased players and fans from the rival team, Al-Ahly, who ran toward the exits and up the stands to escape, according to witnesses.

Ahmed Ghaffar, one of the visiting Al Ahly fans at the stadium, said "layers of people" were stuck, "suffocating inside a narrow corridor" as they tried to get out of the stadium

"The people were stuck over each other because there was no other exist," Ghaffar tweeted on Thursday. "We were between two choices, either death coming from behind us, or the closed doors."

Ghaffar said that seconds after the match ended, Al-Masry fans rushed onto the pitch from all sides while the police stood by motionless. A power outage followed, he said, and "the soccer field fell into darkness."

"We were surprised the the police let them in that easy. The numbers were huge," he said.

As many Al-Ahly fans crowded into the corridor leading out of the stadium, they were trapped, with the doors at the other end locked.

Ghaffar said Al-Masry fans beat those Al-Ahly fans who fell on the floor and also described several stampedes.

Al-Masry fan, Mohammed Mosleh, posted his account on Facebook, saying he saw "thugs with weapons" on his side in the stadium where police presence was meager.

"This was unbelievable," he said. "We were supposed to be celebrating, not killing people. We defeated Al-Ahly, something I saw twice only in my lifetime. All the people were happy. Nobody expected this."

Health ministry official Hisham Sheha said deaths were caused by stabs by sharp tools, brain hemorrhage and concussions. "All those carried to hospitals were already dead bodies," Sheha told state-TV.

One man told state TV he heard gunshots in the stadium, while a lawmaker from Egypt's powerful Muslim Brotherhood said the police didn't prevent fans carrying knives from entering the stadium.

TV footage showed Al-Ahly players rushing for their locker room as fistfights broke out among the hundreds of fans swarming on to the field. Some men had to rescue a manager from the losing team as he was being beaten. Black-clothed police officers stood by, appearing overwhelmed.

The Interior Ministry said 74 people died, including one police officer, and 248 were injured, 14 of them police. A local health official initially said 1,000 people were injured and it was not clear how severely. Security forces arrested 47 people for involvement in the violence, the statement said.

State TV appealed to Egyptians to donate blood for the injured in Port Said, and the military sent two aircraft to evacuate serious cases to the capital, Cairo.

A number of political parties called on the Egyptian parliament to pass no-confidence vote against the government of Kamal el-Ganzouri, a Mubarak-era politician appointed by the much-critized ruling military council. El-Ganzouri himself held an emergency cabinet meeting early Thursday.

Essam el-Erian, a Brotherhood lawmaker, said the military and police were complicit in the violence, accusing them of trying to show that emergency regulations giving security forces wide-ranging powers must be maintained.

"This tragedy is a result of intentional reluctance by the military and the police," he said.

The trigger for the violence, however, remains a mystery since most of the attackers were from the winning team.

April 6 group, which was among youth groups that led the anti-Mubarak uprising, accused the ruling military of collaboration in the violence.

"Is it logical that the force that managed to secure parliamentary elections in nine provinces can't secure a soccer match where skirmishes among fans were expected," the group said in a statement Thursday.

The organized soccer fans known as Ultras have playing an important role in the anti-Mubarak uprising and rallies against the military rule. Their anti-police songs, peppered with curses, have quickly become viral and an expression of the hatred many Egyptians feel toward security forces that were accused of much of the abuse that was widespread under Mubarak's regime.

In the eyes of political activists, the long enmity between Ultras and much-hated security forces under Mubarak and under the military rule explains why the police stepped aside in the face of deadly brawl.

In a statement signed by Ultras of Al-Ahly, the group said Thursday that the military council and former members of Mubarak's regime were retaliating for the Ultras role in the revolution.

"They want to punish us and execute us for our participation in the revolution against suppression," it said, and vowed a "new war in defense of our revolution."

Pakistani Jets Bomb Militant Hideouts Near Afghan Border, Killing 31 Insurgents

div>

PARACHINAR, Pakistan -- Pakistani fighter jets bombed the hideouts of two militant commanders along the Afghan border Wednesday, killing up to 31 insurgents, government and security officials said.

One of those killed was reported to be a Pakistani Taliban leader in Orakzai region named Moin ud Din, said one security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

It was not possible to independently confirm the information because the border region is effectively off-limits to reporters. Militants have in the past disputed army accounts of casualties, and human rights groups say civilians often die in military actions.

There were air strikes in the bordering regions of Kurram and Orakzai, said government officials Wajid Khan and Ameer Gul.

The attacks followed clashes between soldiers and militants over a strategic mountaintop in Kurram that killed over 60 people in the last week.

In recent years the Pakistani military has launched a series of offensives against militants in the border regions, which are only under the nominal control of the central government. They have had some success, but large areas remain under the effective control of extremists, who use the region to plan attacks in Pakistani cities and Afghanistan.

UN nuke official: New trip to Iran planned (AP)

VIENNA ? A U.N. nuclear team on Wednesday announced plans to revisit Tehran "in the very near future," indicating some progress on its quest to wrest information from Iran about allegations that it is secretly working on an atomic arms program.

The announcement from mission leader Herman Nackaerts came shortly after his team landed at Vienna airport after three days of discussions with Iranian officials in Tehran.

While Nackaerts gave no details on what the International Atomic Energy Agency experts had achieved, diplomats had said before their departure that their main focus was to break Iranian resistance to talking about the weapons program allegations.

"We had three days of intensive discussions about all our priorities, and we are committed to resolve all the outstanding issues," Nackaerts told reporters. "And the Iranians said the are committed, too.

"But, of course, there's still a lot of work to be done," he said. "So we have planned another trip in the very near future."

Any progress on the issue would be significant. Iran has refused to discuss the alleged weapons experiments for more than three years, saying they are based on "fabricated documents" provided by a "few arrogant countries" ? a phrase authorities in Iran often use to refer to the United States and its allies.

Faced with Iranian stonewalling, the IAEA summarized its body of information in November in a 13-page document drawing on 1,000 pages of intelligence. It stated then for the first time that some of the alleged experiments can have no other purpose than developing nuclear weapons.

The IAEA team was seeking progress on its efforts to talk to key Iranian scientists suspected of working on a weapons program. They also hoped to break down opposition to their plans to inspect documents related to nuclear work and secure commitments from Iranian authorities to allow future visits.

Beyond concerns about the purported weapons work, the United States and its allies want Iran to halt uranium enrichment, which they believe could eventually lead to weapons-grade material and the production of nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes ? generating electricity and producing medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

Since the discovery in 2002 that Iran was secretly working on uranium enrichment, the nation has expanded that operation to the point where it has thousands of centrifuges churning out enriched material ? the potential source of both nuclear fuel and fissile warhead material.

Iran also has started producing uranium at a higher level than its main stockpile ? a move that would jump start the creation of highly enriched, weapons grade uranium, should it chose to go that route. And it is moving its higher-enriched operation into an underground bunker that it says is safe from attack.

Tehran is under four sets of U.N. Security Council sanctions because of its refusal to heed international concerns about its nuclear programs, as well as penalties imposed by the United States and Western nations meant to force it into dialogue.

The European Union last week imposed an oil embargo on Iran and froze the assets of its central bank. In December, the United States said it would bar financial institutions from the U.S. market if they do business with Iran's central bank.

Cancer sequencing initiative discovers mutations tied to aggressive childhood brain tumors

Cancer sequencing initiative discovers mutations tied to aggressive childhood brain tumors

Monday, January 30, 2012

Researchers studying a rare, lethal childhood tumor of the brainstem discovered that nearly 80 percent of the tumors have mutations in genes not previously tied to cancer. Early evidence suggests the alterations play a unique role in other aggressive pediatric brain tumors as well.

The findings from the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ? Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project (PCGP) offer important insight into a poorly understood tumor that kills more than 90 percent of patients within two years. The tumor, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), is found almost exclusively in children and accounts for 10 to 15 percent of pediatric tumors of the brain and central nervous system.

"We are hopeful that identifying these mutations will lead us to new selective therapeutic targets, which are particularly important since this tumor cannot be treated surgically and still lacks effective therapies," said Suzanne Baker, Ph.D., co-leader of the St. Jude Neurobiology and Brain Tumor Program and a member of the St. Jude Department of Developmental Neurobiology. She is a corresponding author of the study published in the January 29 online edition of the scientific journal Nature Genetics.

DIPG is an extremely invasive tumor that occurs in the brainstem, which is at the base of the skull and controls such vital functions as breathing and heart rate. DIPG cannot be cured by surgery and is accurately diagnosed by non-invasive imaging. As a result, DIPG is rarely biopsied in the U.S. and little is known about it.

Cancer occurs when normal gene activity is disrupted, allowing for the unchecked cell growth and spread that makes cancer so lethal. In this study, investigators found 78 percent of the DIPG tumors had alterations in one of two genes that carry instructions for making proteins that play similar roles in packaging DNA inside cells. Both belong to the histone H3 family of proteins. DNA must be wrapped around histones so that it is compact enough to fit into the nucleus. The packaging of DNA by histones influences which genes are switched on or off, as well as the repair of mutations in DNA and the stability of DNA. Disruption of any of these processes can contribute to cancer.

Researchers said that the mutations seem unique to aggressive childhood brain tumors.

"It is amazing to see that this particular tumor type appears to be characterized by a molecular 'smoking gun' and that these mutations are unique to fast-growing pediatric cancers in the brain," said Richard K. Wilson, Ph.D., director of The Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and one of the study's corresponding authors. "This is exactly the type of result one hopes to find when studying the genomes of cancer patients."

The results are the latest from the PCGP, an ambitious three-year effort to sequence the complete normal and cancer genomes of 600 children with some of the most poorly understood and aggressive pediatric cancers. The human genome includes the complete set of instructions needed to assemble and sustain human life. The goal is to identify differences that explain why cancer develops, spreads and kills. Researchers believe the findings will provide the foundation for new tools to diagnose, treat or prevent the disease.

For this study, researchers sequenced the complete normal and cancer genomes of seven patients with DIPG. "The mutations were found at such high frequency in the cancer genomes of those seven patients that we immediately checked for the same alterations in a larger group of DIPGs," Baker said. When researchers sequenced all 16 of the related genes that make closely related variants of histone H3 proteins in an additional 43 DIPGs, they found many of the tumors contained the same mistakes in only two of these genes.

Of the 50 DIPG tumors included in this study, 60 percent had a single alteration in the makeup of the H3F3A gene. When the mutated gene was translated into a protein, the point mutation led to the substitution of methionine for lysine as the 27th amino acid in this variant of histone H3 protein. Another 18 percent of the DIPG patients carried the same mistake in a different gene, HIST1H3B.

Researchers are now working to understand how mutations in H3F3A and HIST1H3B impact cell function and contribute to cancer. Earlier research provides some clues. The lysine that is mutated is normally targeted by enzymes that attach other molecules to histone H3, influencing how it interacts with other proteins that regulate gene expression, Baker said. Mutations in the enzymes that target histone H3 have been identified in other cancers, but this is the first report showing a specific alteration of histones in cancer.

H3F3A and HIST1H3B were also mutated in other aggressive childhood brain tumors, glioblastoma, that develop outside the brain stem. Of 36 such tumors included in this study, 36 percent carried one of three distinct point mutations in the genes. The alterations included another single change in the makeup of H3F3A not found in DIPGs.

The histone H3 genes, however, were not mutated in any of the 252 other childhood tumors researchers checked for this study. The list included the brain tumors known as low-grade gliomas, medulloblastomas and ependymomas plus other cancers outside the brain and nervous system. The H3 changes have not been reported in any other cancers, including adult glioblastoma. "This suggests these particular mutations give a very important selective advantage, particularly in the developing brainstem and to a lesser degree in the developing brain, which leads to a terribly aggressive brain tumor in children, but not in adults," Baker said.

"This discovery would not have been possible without the unbiased approach taken by the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project," Baker said. "The mutations had not been reported in any other tumor, so we would not have searched for them in DIPGs. Yet the alterations clearly play an important role in generating this particular tumor."
