EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? Donovan McNabb is available again. The Minnesota Vikings waived the 13-year veteran quarterback on Thursday, giving him the opportunity to sign with another team for the stretch run in a parting coach Leslie Frazier described as mutual.

Frazier pushed for the Vikings to trade a sixth-round draft pick this summer to the Washington Redskins in exchange for McNabb. He wanted stability he believed McNabb would bring to the offense after the NFL lockout kept rookie Christian Ponder from practicing with the team or working with his coaches until training camp.

Frazier and McNabb met in 1999, when the defensive backs coach and the first-round draft pick spent their first year with the Philadelphia Eagles. Friendly to the end, Frazier wished McNabb well and said part of the reason for the move was for the player's sake.

"This was the best decision for both parties," Frazier said. "He was a great player and has been a great player for our league for a long, long time. Have a lot of affection and love for Donovan."

McNabb went 1-5 as a starter, threw for only four touchdowns and completed just five passes of 25-plus yards. Frazier said he didn't regret the trade given the situation the Vikings were in this summer, and said he believes McNabb can still play in the NFL but stopped short of saying he can be an effective starter.

"I'm not certain about that. ... A lot depends on the team he goes to, if he goes to another team," Frazier said.

McNabb was benched in favor of Ponder in the fourth quarter of Minnesota's game at Chicago on Oct. 16 and hasn't played since. Frazier said he was a help to Ponder and Joe Webb in their learning process and described as "awesome" his attitude over the last few weeks.

"He's been a true pro in every sense of the word," Frazier said. "He's a class guy. Always has been, and he's done a good job in spite of the fact he wasn't our starting quarterback."

Improving the teacher-student ratio at the game's most complex position is what Frazier pointed to when asked how the move benefited the Vikings. It essentially means offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and quarterbacks Craig Johnson will have more opportunity to work with Ponder and Webb, who is in his second year. Frazier said he wasn't sure how the open roster spot would be filled, whether with another quarterback or a player at another position.

McNabb was in the locker room, seen rather innocuously asking running back Adrian Peterson to autograph a jersey. But he was gone by the time practice began and unavailable for comment.

The question now is whether he'll catch on elsewhere or call it quits with six Pro Bowl selections and currently the third-best interception percentage of all time. Injuries have felled several quarterbacks around the league over the last month, and the Bears ? McNabb's hometown team ? are one team with an opening as Jay Cutler recovers from a broken thumb.

"When you have a guy who has been this successful in this league, he has an idea how he wants his career to continue or not to continue. That played a role in making that decision," Frazier said.

The two spoke Wednesday about the situation, but Frazier declined to characterize the discussion as McNabb requesting his release. He said McNabb didn't mention retirement or signing with another team when they talked.

"We both agreed that this was probably going to be the best thing to do," Frazier said.

McNabb enjoyed an 11-year run as the starter in Philadelphia, going to the Super Bowl with the Eagles after the 2004 season and becoming a regular fixture in the playoffs. Only Aaron Rodgers and Neil O'Donnell have a better career ratio of interceptions to pass attempts. But after he was traded by his long-time team, McNabb had a rough year with the Redskins. He got benched there, too.

The ability to avoid turnovers turned out to be part of the problem with the Vikings. He was reluctant to throw deep, and the offense lacked life and rhythm while he was in there. Playing it safe didn't wind up helping them.

"You guys watched our games that he started," Frazier said. "There were a lot of factors contributing to our not winning ballgames. As I mentioned when I made the change, it wasn't all about Donovan. That's been proven along the way. There are a lot of other areas on our team that need to be going in the right direction in order for us to have success."

New nanoscale electronic state discovered on graphene sheets

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Researchers from the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) have discovered electronic stripes, called 'charge density waves', on the surface of the graphene sheets that make up a graphitic superconductor. This is the first time these stripes have been seen on graphene, and the finding is likely to have profound implications for the exploitation of this recently discovered material, which scientists believe will play a key role in the future of nanotechnology. The discovery is reported in Nature Communications, 29th November.

Graphene is a material made up of a single sheet of carbon atoms just one atom thick, and is found in the marks made by a graphite pencil. Graphene has remarkable physical properties and therefore has great technological potential, for example, in transparent electrodes for flat screen TVs, in fast energy-efficient transistors, and in ultra-strong composite materials. Scientists are now devoting huge efforts to understand and control the properties of this material.

The LCN team donated extra electrons to a graphene surface by sliding calcium metal atoms underneath it. One would normally expect these additional electrons to spread out evenly on the graphene surface, just as oil spreads out on water. But by using an instrument known as a scanning tunneling microscope, which can image individual atoms, the researchers have found that the extra electrons arrange themselves spontaneously into nanometer-scale stripes. This unexpected behavior demonstrates that the electrons can have a life of their own which is not connected directly to the underlying atoms. The results inspire many new directions for both science and technology. For example, they suggest a new method for manipulating and encoding information, where binary zeros and ones correspond to stripes running from north to south and running from east to west respectively.

This work is part of an ongoing multi-disciplinary research effort into graphene at the LCN and follows on from the original discovery of superconductivity in the graphite superconductor CaC6 by Weller at al. published in Nature Physics, doi:10.1038/nphys0010.

Professor Jan Zaanen of Leiden University and winner of the prestigious Spinoza prize for, among other things, his role as proponent of the stripe concept for atomically thin materials, commented: "This discovery is another important step towards demonstrating the ubiquity of stripes, and the fact that they appear in the world's simplest host ? the two-dimensional network of carbon atoms that is graphene ? means that more great science and applications are not far behind."

Euro Finance Ministers Discuss Radical Ideas to Avert Global Crisis ...

Scottrade: $7 Online Trades. Real-Time Stock Quotes

Finance ministers from the euro zone?s 17 member nations have converged on the European Union headquarters in Brussels today in a desperate bid to save their currency and to protect the global economy from a debt-induced financial crisis.

Hot Feature: Obama and EU Leaders Consider Bilateral Trade Agreement

The ministers were discussing ideas hitherto unthinkable, now being considered in a moment of utter desperation. Among the previously taboo ideas being mentioned today are: countries ceding fiscal sovereignty to a central authority; some sort of elite group of euro nations that would guarantee one another?s loans but require strong fiscal discipline from anyone seeking membership.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated her support today for changes to Europe?s current treaties in order to create a fiscal union. ?Our priority is to have the whole of the euro zone to be placed on a stronger treaty basis,? Merkel said today in Berlin. ?This is what we have devoted all of our efforts to; this is what I?m concentrating on in all of the talks with my counterparts.?

Merkel acknowledged that changing the treaties won?t be an easy task, as not all of the European Union?s 27 member states ?are enthusiastic about it.? However, she dismissed reports that said the 17-nation single-currency bloc might go it alone with a swifter treaty between governments.

With the entire global community relying upon Europe?s survival, aggressive action has become a matter of extreme urgency, as euro zone governments have 638 billion euros in past debts coming due in 2012, of which 40% needs to be refinance in the first four months of the year, according to Barclays Capital. Recent debt auctions have seen yields climbing in some of the euro zone?s largest economies, including Italy, where yields shot up Tuesday to above 7%, an unsustainable level on par with rates that forced Greece, Portugal, and Ireland to seek bailouts.

At the top of today?s agenda is finding a means to more fully integrate the euro zone?s disparate nations ? ranging from the miniscule Malta to the powerful Germany. French Finance Minister Francois Baroin said on France-Info radio that countries should integrate their budgets more closely and monitor one another?s spending.

?We have to modify euro zone governance,? Baroin said on Tuesday. ?We definitely have to move toward more integrated budgetary consolidation, fiscal convergence with our neighbors.? France and Germany will make proposals on how euro-zone countries can monitor one another under such a system, said Baroin.

Another issue of discussion today will likely be the joint-issuance of eurobonds. It is thought that having stronger countries like Germany stand behind the general European debt would lower borrowing rates for at-risk countries like Italy, helping them avoid a debt spiral that leads to national bankruptcy, though it would increase borrowing costs for the countries with the region?s strongest economies.

Germany, which pays a yield of about 2% on its debt, has been fiercely opposed to the eurobond proposal. However, the region?s second-largest economy, France, may propose joint bonds among a subset of euro-zone countries, according to a French official.

Proponents of the joint bonds say the proceeds could be used to help the euro zone?s weaker countries deal with their debt in exchange for strict conditions being imposed on their budgets. However, critics argue that they would further fragment the euro zone into strong and weak countries.

Don?t Miss: U.S. Home Prices Continued to Decline in September

The world is watching Europe, waiting upon a solution. It?s not just the euro that?s at stake. If the euro fails, so too does the 27-nation European Union. Bank lending would freeze, stock markets would likely crash, and Europe?s economies would follow. Nations in the euro-zone would see their economic output decline, though temporarily, by as much as 50%, according to UBS forecasters. That economic meltdown would then spread to the U.S. and Asia, who would find themselves caught up in the credit freeze while their exports to Europe would collapse.

T.I./B.o.B Joint Album 'Started As A Joke'

'It seems to be taking form in a very organic way,' Bobby Ray tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

T.I. has definitely been making up for lost time.

Since being released from prison in September, the King of the South has been working overtime in the studio releasing his own singles ("I'm Flexin'," "Pyro") and remixes of other artists' songs (The Throne's "N---as in Paris," 2Chainz's "Spend It"). For his next album, Trouble Man, Tip said he's already recorded 45 songs. And then there is his collaboration album with B.o.B.

During an October interview with Shade 45's "Sway in the Morning," the Grand Hustle CEO said he was "flirting" with the idea of doing a tag-team album with Bobby Ray. On the set of his "Strange Clouds" video, B.o.B. confirmed that the two are in the studio.

"The joint album, it actually started as a joke," B.o.B told MTV News. "Tip would always refer to me as the Martian, and in one of his lyrics, he said, 'It's the man and the Martian,' and we said, 'Man that could be an album title.'

"We kinda just played around with it. But it seems to be taking form in a very organic way," he added.

Just because they are recording together doesn't mean things are finalized. In his October interview, Tip wouldn't fully commit. "Even this, this is a conversation that we had, this is an idea," he said about the possibility of a B.o.B joint album. "It's not set in stone. It's not concrete as of yet."

Before that, fans will most likely see solo LPs from each of the MCs. On Monday, B.o.B. released his mixtape E.P.I.C. (Every Play Is Crucial), and it's safe to assume his sophomore LP, Strange Clouds, is next. "It's all about the fusion between the outer limits and the inner limits, from the sky to the ground; it's everything in between, above and below, so Strange Clouds, for me, it's my 'Twilight Zone,' " he told MTV News of his upcoming Adventures of Bobby Ray follow-up.

What are you expecting from a T.I. and B.o.B team-up? Let us know in the comments!

Red Hot Chili Peppers announce U.S. tour dates (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers on Monday announced six new dates beginning in January for the North American leg of their "I'm With You" world tour.

Concerts in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee have been added to the tour, according to a posting on the band's website. The tour kicked off in Bogota, Columbia in September and is expected to continue throughout 2012.

The "I'm With You" tour supports the Los Angeles band's tenth studio album, released in August this year, which includes singles such as "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" and "Monarchy of Roses."

The latest tour also features the band's newest addition, guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced John Frusciante. Klinghoffer joined frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith in 2010 for their latest album.

Tickets for the new U.S. shows are due to go on sale on December 3, and the band's official website said more shows and ticket sale dates would be announced in the coming weeks.

Under questioning, he repeated that when he saw her on TV the previous day, ?I didn't recognize the face. I didn't recognize the name, nor the voice.? But Bialek said she had spoken with Cain on Sept. 30 at a Tea Party event, and Amy Jacobson, a Chicago radio host who was there, confirmed this account. ?They were hugging,? Rep Mack says he's running for Fla US Senate (AP)

SARASOTA, Fla. ? Republican Congressman Connie Mack IV has announced he's entering the U.S. Senate race.

Mack said Monday night that he hopes to challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

Mack will first have to win the primary. Buoyed by name recognition, Mack surged to the top of a Quinnipiac University poll even before officially entering the race. His father is former Sen. Connie Mack III and his great-grandfather is Hall of Fame baseball manager Connie Mack.

He will now have to prove he deserves the front-runner status as the other four major candidates attack his record.

Also seeking the nomination are former Sen. George LeMieux, former state Rep. Adam Hasner, retired Army Col. Mike McCalister and former steakhouse chain CEO Craig Miller.
