Instant view: South Africa's ANC kicks out Malema for 5 years (Reuters)

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) ? South Africa's ruling African National Congress kicked out its Youth League leader, Julius Malema, for five years on Thursday after finding him guilty of sowing division in the party.

Malema, who had been pushing for nationalization of the mines in Africa's biggest economy, is expected to appeal against the sentence, which was harsher than analysts had expected.

Following are reactions from analysts:

JUSTICE MALALA, POLITICAL COMMENTATOR

"The principles enunciated are so watertight that it's going to be difficult to appeal. The principles enunciated take us back to the ANC of Nelson Mandela, take us back to the ANC of Albert Luthuli and that is where Julius Malema and his Youth League made a huge miscalculation. The ANC is bigger than them."

JEFF GABLE, CHIEF ECONOMIST, ABSA CAPITAL

"Given that Malema was seen as an important point-person for political factions within the ANC that have been looking to insert a more radical set of policies around land reform and state intervention in the mining sector, as well as a lightning rod for an anti-Zuma campaign, it is likely to be viewed as an important strengthening of President Zuma.

"All of this matters more than usual, as the political battle lines within the ANC and its partners continue to shift ahead of next year's highly important ANC policy conference (mid-year) and elective conference (December 2012).

"In the very near-term, watch for any move by Malema to try and appeal the sentence and/or to coalesce a group around himself to try and fight the ruling.

"Our sense is this is likely to be the end of the political road for Malema, at least during the duration of his five-year suspension."

CHRISTIE VILJOEN, ECONOMIST, NKC INDEPENDENT ECONOMIST

"Whatever they do with Malema the big issues he has raised and what he represents won't go away. The poverty, the inequalities and the unemployment continue.

"He's not necessarily going to lie down, he's going to continue being vocal and somebody else will probably step up to take his place at the Youth League

"We will have to see if there's an appeal, who knows what could happen. I can't see he is going to be quiet.

"The problem now is that he motivated himself as somebody who stands for the poor and now the ruling party is saying: we don't like you anymore so the issue of poverty will be raised more and more."

KARIMA BROWN, POLITICAL COMMENTATOR ON ENEWS CHANNEL

"Julius Malema has lost the presidency of the ANCYL. That is the most important ramification of what (disciplinary hearing chairman) Derek Hanekom has just said.

"The larger story is that the Youth League leadership is in crisis.

"Mr. Malema has had a date with history today and he is finished in the ANC and ANCYL."

NIC BORAIN, INDEPENDENT POLITICAL ANALYST

"This is obviously good for the ANC -- for its image, for its internal coherence and for the reputation of its leadership. The loutish and grandiose behavior of the ANC Youth League and the individual leaders' involvement in looting the public sector behind a facade of representing the interest of the poorest and most marginalized has deeply damaged the reputation and core values of the ANC.

"Much will depend on whether the leadership has the stomach and spine to follow the disciplinary process with a thorough implementation of the sentence throughout all forums of the organization. We shouldn't forget that important individuals and constituencies have backed Malema through this process.

"Will the sentence provoke a backlash, attempting to build opposition by portraying Malema as a victim? It is obviously possibility, but most observers are hoping that the grave tones and thorough approach of the ANC Disciplinary Committee might presage a process of repair and renewal in the ruling party."

ANNE FRUHAUF, AFRICA ANALYST, EURASIA GROUP

"The ruling doesn't directly tackle the nationalization issue. But it will be viewed as a signal that the most vocal proponent of nationalization has been cut down to size.

"The Youth League doesn't dictate policy, but Malema's tireless lobbying within the party and on the streets has caused great anxiety among investors.

"In our view, the nationalization debate will become a little more muted if Malema's influence wanes. But one thing is clear: nationalization is not off the agenda and will feature at the ANC's 2012 policy conference.

"We still don't expect the ANC to endorse anything like the Youth League's demand for 60 percent state equity and constitutional amendments to expropriation clauses. But there seems to be clear consensus around the need for more redistribution.

"This won't be a worst case outcome, but this is not good news for investors, because many already consider the current policy regime to be onerous.

"The succession battles have been so bitter that they will leave the ANC even more divided. The run-up to Mangaung won't be plain sailing for Zuma, especially if Malema can drag out the looming appeal against his sentence and refuses to relinquish his leadership of the Youth League."

Jim DeMint: Veterans Hiring Bill Is A Democratic 'Trick'

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) distinguished himself Thursday as the only senator to oppose a measure aimed at hiring veterans, calling it a "trick" by the Obama administration and Democrats.

He knew his decision wouldn't be popular, but still cast the lone vote against an amendment to grant employers tax breaks worth up to $9,600 for giving a veteran a job.

"I know what I'm about to discuss won't be very popular. I'll probably be accused of not supporting veterans by the politicians pandering for their votes," DeMint said on the Senate floor Thursday. "But I'm not going to be intimidated to vote for something that may make sense politically but is inherently unfair."

In fact, it did not take long for Democrats to point out DeMint's vote to reporters, in case they missed it.

DeMint argued that passing such a tax break was simply catering to an interest group and predicted little hiring would come from the measure. "Despite the overwhelming evidence that these tax credits do not stimulate hiring for targeted groups, the Obama administration continues to push Congress to pass another tax credit, this time exclusively for veterans," he said. "By using a politically sensitive group the day before Veterans Day, the Democrats are hoping they can trick Republicans into further complicating the tax code."

None of DeMint's Republican colleagues agreed with him. Indeed, they held up the legislation as an example of bipartisanship aimed at addressing the unemployment crisis.

DeMint later voted in favor of the larger bill to which the veterans amendment was added, a measure to delay a 3 percent withholding tax that was supposed to help the federal government crack down on contractor fraud. That bill passed unanimously, 95-to-0.

In another twist in the odd world of Congress, DeMint had been one of a large majority of senators who voted for that 3 percent withholding tax in 2005. Then it had been aimed at federal contractors who failed to pay their taxes; the 3 percent essentially served as collateral to ensure the companies paid up.

But with the economy in the tank, legislators on Thursday deemed it an impediment to hiring.

Michael Jackson doctor calls singer an "addict" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The doctor convicted of manslaughter in Michael Jackson's death has called the "Thriller" singer a drug "addict" in a television interview that will air on morning talk show "Today" this week.

Dr. Conrad Murray, who now sits in a Los Angeles jail awaiting sentencing for involuntary manslaughter, spoke to NBC News journalist Savannah Guthrie before the verdict was returned at his trial on Monday. The interview will air in two parts on Thursday and Friday on NBC's "Today" show.

The personal physician to Jackson never testified during his six-week trial stemming from the entertainer's June 2009 death of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol and sedatives.

Murray admitted to police that he gave Jackson those drugs as a sleep aid at the singer's mansion, but his attorneys argued the singer self-injected a fatal dose of propofol.

During the NBC interview, Guthrie asked the doctor if he was right to leave Jackson alone in his bedroom knowing he could self-inject the drug. Murray said he could not have foreseen that possibility.

"Had I known what I know today in retrospect, that Mr. Jackson was an addict, and he had shared that information with me, addicts may behave in a way that is unreasonable and you may consider it," Murray said in the interview.

Murray's attorneys had argued during his trial that Jackson was addicted to the painkiller Demerol that he received from another doctor in the weeks before his death, but they barely mentioned any possible addiction to propofol.

Jackson's family has denied that Jackson was addicted to Demerol, and an autopsy did not reveal any amount of that painkiller in the singer's system.

In the interview, Murray also suggested it could be acceptable to administer propofol in a home, despite testimony of doctors at his trial who said they would never do that. "I think propofol is not recommended to be given in the home setting, but it is not contraindicated," Murray told Guthrie.

Propofol expert Dr. Steven Shafer testified for prosecutors during the trial and disputed the defense's theory that Jackson had self-injected the drug. Instead, Murray likely set up an intravenous drip of propofol for Jackson that stopped his breathing, Shafer said.

Murray also defended the fact that he allowed over 20 minutes to elapse between the time he discovered Jackson had stopped breathing and when an ambulance was called.

"No one is allowed to come upstairs except for Mr. Jackson. His security is not allowed to enter the house," Murray said.

The physician first alerted the Jackson family chef, then called the singer's assistant, according to trial testimony.

Murray will also appear in a tell-all documentary called "Michael Jackson and the Doctor" to air on Friday on MSNBC.

The physician, who faces the possible loss of his medical license as a result of his involuntary manslaughter conviction, will return before a judge for a hearing on November 29, when he could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.

Google laser hack, Hangout shoots first (video)

We've all been in those boring meetings where you just want to let rip on marketing with a laser blaster. And now you can... kinda. Best of all, you don't even need to leave your La-Z-Boy. House4Hack, a Johannesburg based hackerspace knocked up a dual-servo, Arduino-controlled webcam for its entry into the 2011 Google+ hackathon. Deciding that this wasn't nearly awesome enough, they made the logical improvement of adding a splendiferous laser attachment for the perfect Google+ Hangout accessory. Now, colleagues can 'show-up' remotely when they can't be present in person, and register their disapproval in the way nature intended -- radiation amplified light. To see it in action, tap the video after the jump.

UFC 138?s Three Stars: Terry Etim, Renan Barao and Che Mills

UFC 138?s Three Stars: Terry Etim, Renan Barao and Che Mills

UFC 138 was overlooked. Sandwiched between Nick Diaz at UFC 137 and the UFC's first foray into network television, it's no surprise that a tape-delayed card without a title fight would not get the same love as those events, but the fighters still delivered with exciting performances. Here are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Tell us your in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Terry Etim: The British fighter's last trip to the Octagon was a loss at UFC 112. He must have spent the past 19 months thinking about that loss, and how to get back on the right foot in his next fight. He did that by submitting Edward Faaloloto in just 17 seconds, causing the crowd in Birmingham to erupt in joy. He was awarded a $70,000 Submission of the Night bonus for his work, which eased the frustration of a 19-month layoff.

No. 2 star -- Renan Barao: How do you quiet a crowd full of Brad Pickett supporters? By knocking him down, beating him up, and then jumping on his back and securing a rear-naked choke, all in the first round. Barao and Pickett both won Fight of the Night bonuses for their efforts. Barao may want to use that money to take some gymnastics lessons, as his one misstep was a fall on his celebration aerial.

No. 3 star -- Che Mills: While watching the fights, my internet suddenly went out during Chris Cope's walk in. It took barely two minutes to get my internet working again, and I was ready to start watching Cope's woo-filled fight. I was too late. In his UFC debut, Mills took less than a minute to take out Cope with a brutal knee and ground and pound. He, too, earned an extra $70K for his trouble for the Knockout of the Night. Not a bad way to start out with the UFC.
