Image of the Week #31, February 20th, 2012:

From: Conservation Conversation in Clay and SciArt of the Heart, both by Kalliopi Monoyios at Symbiartic .

Kate MacDowell?s striking sculptures blend the real with the surreal. Behind almost all of her meticulously crafted pieces is a clear conservation message. In some, the message is unmistakable; in others, as in this image titled ?Entangled,? we are allowed more freedom to come up with a story of our own. In her words: ?Visuals can communicate so much, yet still be open to multiple and contradictory interpretations. So even though my starting point might be the introduction of the myxomatosis virus to control pest rabbits, or pollution in lakes affecting the sexual organs of alligators, the viewer might create a completely different narrative to explain the images?.
